I’min the kitchen in an empty house listening to a music streaming station of a friend of mine who is a DJ. As I cook dinner for Shaw and myself, my mind drifts back to when I was a little younger and would frequent dance clubs. I move around the kitchen in time with the music, singing some of the words when part of the mix has a song that I know.

“Holy shit! This takes me back to a dance floor with dirt, underneath the night sky with the morning on the horizon, surrounded by palm trees.” Shaw comes into the kitchen.

“I know right, I was going through some of my playlists and remembered that I had everything that this DJ put out.”

“Did you date him or something?” Shaw quirks an eyebrow.

“We didn’t exactly date, we hung out.”

“Oh, I’m sure you did. He’s a nice guy if I remember correctly.” Shaw taps the counter in the beat with the music.

“Definitely. He’s also gotten pretty huge. Last I heard he was traveling all over the place, playing at festivals in other countries.”

“You can technically say that you hung out with someone who is now famous?” Shaw grins.

“So, dinner tonight, I hope you don’t mind, but I’m making Old Bay burgers.”

“Are they better burgers than regular burgers?” He cocks his head to the side.

“We’ll see how they are. I’m not sure what the hell I’m cooking. It’s one of those meal subscription boxes.”

“Ah, we’re being adventurous in our food, are we?” he jokes.

“You say that now, but once you put my meat in your mouth, you won’t be making fun of me then.” I quirk an eyebrow.

“Oh, she’s got jokes!” he laughs as his phone in his pocket rings. He looks at the caller and answers.

“Hey,” he answers. He looks pensive as he listens to the caller, then his eyes dart up to me. “Hold on, let me put you on speaker. Summer is right here.” He lays the phone on the counter and a voice comes over the speakerphone.

“Hello?” the voice asks.

“We’re both here,” Shaw says.

“Good. Okay, so Marie is accusing Summer of harassment.”

I cover my mouth in shock.

“That’s the opposite of what happened.” Shaw said.

“Can you tell me what happened?” the voice asks.

“Well, I was at my bookstore at the front counter, I looked up and saw Marie walking quickly toward my store. I went outside, so she wouldn’t disturb my customers.”

“What happened next?”

“I let her insult the hell out of me. She practically called me a home wrecker and caused a scene.” I explain.

“What did you say?” he asks.

“I just stood there and let her get whatever out of her system. I didn’t say one word to her as soon as she started talking.”

“What did you say before she started talking?”

“I asked if Mason was okay, but she just started right in on me from there. Other than that I was silent as she went off on me in front of anyone who walked by.” I explain.

“And Shaw, were you there as well?”

“No, I received a call from one of Summer’s employees. I was close-by and went to her right away,” he says.
