“Not exactly.” I shake my head.

“And you had to fight your attraction from him and he you. You guys had to surreptitiously meet and now here we are.” Shane says.

“Well, that’s not how it all happened either.”

“And you guys were an item from the start?”

“No, only about five months.” I tell them.

“He’s been with the agency for six.”

I look away and take a sip of my latte.

“So, I understand why you guys couldn’t be exactly a public couple, but you couldn’t tell us?” Olivia asks.

“I mean, I kind of did, but I just omitted some of the details. He wanted to go public with the relationship, but I kept rejecting the idea because it would have looked bad for him, being the new boss and then I didn’t want to look like I was trying to climb the ladder. Basically, what everyone is likely whispering at the office.”

“Like a true hussy!” Shane jokes. “Okay, so you have had this secret boyfriend and apparently there’s more?” Shane asks.

“Yeah. There’s more.” I reply looking between the two before taking a deep breath. I lean forward and cross my hands in front of me.

“Come on with the suspense.” Shane shakes his hands up in the air and says dramatically.

“I’ve accepted a job with Nat Geo. It would have been the promotion that I had been waiting for here. So, my relationship coming out today kind of went in time with giving my two -week notice.” I tell them.

Neither of them says anything for what feels like several minutes.

“So, that means that we won’t be working together anymore.” Shane finally says crossing his arms.

“The good news is that we’ll be in the same building. So, we’ll still be able to see one another. We just won’t be able to hang out in the kitchen anymore. But you can always come down to the fifth floor.”

“Wait, the fifth floor? There’s another magazine in this building?” Olivia asks.

“Yeah, I’ve actually been down there a few times with Nicole. It’s really chill.”

“Why didn’t you say anything about it?” Olivia asks.

“Well, I didn’t know whether or not I would get the job,” I say quietly.

“I wish you would have said something. I mean it even looked like you didn’t tell Mr. Montgomery,” Olivia says.

“I didn’t. I was afraid of saying something to anyone. Steph didn’t even know.”

“Oh, well, I don’t feel as bad now.” Olivia laughs.

“When do you start the new job? Are you really going to stay for the full two-weeks?”

“I wish I was starting right now. Now that everyone knows about my relationship, it’s going to make the next few weeks a little awkward.”

“I heard one of the payroll ladies complaining about it. She mentioned special favors and that you looked like the type.” Shane says in a hushed voice as Olivia elbows him.

“Great. It’s already started.”
