“Okay, so since you’re here, we might as well start.”

“Where do you want me to begin?” He asks eagerly.

“At the very beginning.” I tell him.

And he does. He tells me about all the trouble that he got in before college, the on again and off again relationship with his ex, the forcing of marriage and then all the dark details of their relationship with Kady, their child being the only light. I felt sorry for him, angry for him and also happy for him.

His ex sounds like a true Disney villain and I’m happy that he’s removed himself from that toxicity.

After dinner with his parents, I fully understand why he didn’t want me to go with him. His relationship with them isn’t the best, and I would likely had been treated like an outcast.

I was.

After a few hours of confessions, I feel better, but it’s still a path that we should have been on since the start. So, we’re not all the way good, however it’s a work in progress.

We walk out the main entrance of the gardens and to the parking area. I lead him to my car, and we stop to lean against the trunk side by side.

“Thank you, for talking to me today,” he says.

“Thank you for telling me what seems like your life story.”

“It’s the abridged version, but you now know all the important parts or have been involved in them. I am so sorry that I hid stuff from you.”

I don’t reply, but instead I step into him. He places his hands on my hips, unsure of what to do in this moment. I lean into him and place a lingering kiss on his lips. He lets me take the lead, doesn’t push me for more, yet I can tell that he’s holding himself back by the grip he has on me.

“I’ll see you at work tomorrow, maybe we can figure a way to have lunch together?” I say.

“I’ll make it happen.” He says quickly.

“Thank you for the salad.” I give him another kiss on the cheek and pull away.

He stands to the side of my car as I get in, start the engine, then back out of my parking spot. With a wave, I turn out of the parking lot towards Huntington Drive.

I feel a little lighter in the heart now that we’ve talked, but he has to regain my trust again, which he is aware of.

It’s almost as if we’re starting at zero.
