Chapter Seventeen

The first fewminutes at the table are tense.

Quinn’s parents are assholes. They don’t have the most welcoming approach to new people and seem to have forgotten that I am here. They are talking about me as if I’m not even there and then sending me the rudest of looks.

“So, where is Amelia?” Quinn’s mother asks, ignoring that I’m sitting beside him and clearly not this Amelia person.

“I’m not sure where she is, I don’t keep track of her. She is likely at her house.” Quinn says emotionless. “Besides, I would rather you get to know Sidney, she’s who I brought you here to meet.”

“Maybe we should go?” I whisper.

“No, let’s have a delicious meal, on them. We can sit here and enjoy this food even with them here.” He says gently.

Feeling awkward, I can’t just do that.

I straighten my back and I set my eyes on Quinn’s mom.

“So, Mrs. Montgomery, I hear that you guys live here in Los Angeles, are you from here?” I ask, hoping to spark some sort of conversation.

She looks up, with a hint of shock in her eyes that she is being spoken to.

She wipes the corners of her mouth, then looks at me.

“Naturally. And you Simone?” She asks.

“Sidney,” I reply. “And yes, I am a native Angelino.”

“My son, Quinlan here, is as well. But then he left for New York and everything from there changed.”

I look to Quinn and see that he’s irritated.

“I thought that you were bringing us here to tell us that you and Amelia were reconciling, not that you were being sinful and dating someone else. Completely ignoring everything that you promised to her all those years ago.”

I almost choke on my own spit. Being sinful?

“Can we maybe talk about something different.” Quinn says ignoring her. “Dad, how is work?”

His father sits up and opens his mouth, but his wife silences him and speaks over him.

“You should be working on your existing relationship, Quinlan. Figuring out what went wrong and where. You should do it for Kady. Don’t bring all kinds of women into her life, just to make yourself happy. That’s what you do in a marriage, it’s a constant work in progress that you have to work on. So, work on it.”

“What is she talking about, Quinn?” I ask in a hushed whisper.

His mother has an evil laugh, and she decides to share it with us now as she leans back in her chair.

“Hardly a relationship if she doesn’t know about your failed marriage and your child, wouldn’t you say?” she sneers.

With wide eyes, I slowly turn to Quinn and his jaw is set as he glares at his mother. His eyes turn to me, and his gaze softens.

“Are you ready to leave?” He asks.

“Yeah, maybe we should.” I tell him.

He stands and throws his napkin on the table, reaches for my hand and pulls me up.

“Thank you for the glasses of water, but I think that we’re going to head out of here and have dinner elsewhere in better company.”

His parents say nothing as we briskly walk away. Weaving around tables until we get to the exit. Quinn hands his valet card and we stand at the curb and for most of the ride to his place in silence.
