“You outdid yourself with dinner tonight. Have you been watching YouTube on how to cook?” Peyton jokes placing her silverware on her plate and sits back in her chair.

“I may have had a little assistance in the kitchen. I found this awesome app that shows you step by step how to do it. There was a lot of pausing and rewinding, but I’m glad you liked it.” I smile and stand while leaning over to pick up her plate and mine to take into the kitchen.

“Well, I salute you. It was delicious. Hey, do you mind if I run a load of laundry? I forgot to take home some of my dirty clothes the other night.”

I place the plates in the sink and turn to her, my hands behind my back and placed on the edge of the counter.

She’s given me the perfect prompt. Let’s do this. It’s time.

“I’ve got something that I want to show you,” I tell her, regulating my breathing to remain calm.

“Did you find a new special room in the house?” She laughs as I did find a door that was covered to a basement in the kitchen. Which is strange, because there aren’t many basements in California.

“Just wait, come with me.” I hold my hand out to her and lead her around the corner and up the stairs.

“Okay, are you ready?” I turn and look at her.

“What’s going on, Max, you’re acting weird. Did you finally add a bed and stuff in here? Wanna share your manly decoration skills or something.”

“Close your eyes,” I say and with a pout, she does. I take her hand again in mine and bring her into the center of the room slowly. “Okay, keep them closed.”

I turn on the light and then return to stand in front of her and take a deep breath.

I look around the room once more and then tell her to open her eyes.

My hands are still gripping onto hers and I’m watching the wheels in her head spin as she takes in the room. I release her hands as she begins to turn in place.

“What’s all this?” she asks as Scout comes into the room, sniffing around the edges around the spare bedroom.

“I know that you have a thing for all things calendars and I thought it would be a memorable way to ask you something.”

She places a hand on her hips and looks at me. “Should I be more nervous than I am right now?”

“No, not at all. Okay, so this is something I’ve wanted to do since moving to Los Angeles, and I couldn’t think of a better way to make it something that you will remember,” I smile, prolonging asking her.

After a few seconds of silence, she rolls her eyes.

“Okay, the suspense is killing me.” She bounces on the tips of her toes in anticipation.

“Will you move in with me?”

Epilogue

“This one time in Vegas, I accidentally got married.”

Three Years Later

“I now pronounce you, husband and wife, you may now kiss the bride,” the priest says.

I lean forward at the same time that Max does, and we meet in the middle. Our joined hands wrap around one another for a brief moment and then we pull apart, not wanting to gross everyone out with a full on make-out session like we did last night at the rehearsal dinner.

We invited thirty people, and each one of them stand up and clap as we turn to face them. With our hands up in the air, there is barking from Scout in combination with hoots and hollers while we walk down the aisle past our guests.

We held our wedding in our backyard in the late afternoon. There were string lights hanging above the entire space, and “L” shape table along the edges of the property for our dinner. We had white flowers throughout the space, to stand out amongst the teal of the house and the green of the grass. The setting couldn’t be more perfect, and yet today—it is.

We made it.
