“Not separate enough sometimes,” is less than quietly huffed.

“And what do you do, Shan?” I politely investigate.

“I’m a second-grade teacher at a private academy in Ann Arbor.”

“Michigan?” There’s no stopping my brow from lifting in confusion. “What brings you to Highland?”

“This!” Small, excited claps are attached to a wiggle. “J.T. flew his plane all the way up there just to whisk me away for the weekend!”

A quirked eyebrow remains. “His plane?”

“It’s not like you fly,” my fiancée defends in a murmur.

“It was so romantic. He’s so romantic,” Shan gushes at us before turning to face him. “I’m going to go powder my nose just in case they take more photos of us.”

J.T. nods in response and waits until she’s completely out of earshot to explain, “I was desperate.”

“You’re always desperate,” Bryn jabs with a crooked smirk. “Which makes no fucking sense considering how pretty you are.”

Unhappy grunts are instantly expelled, a sound that have both of them shooting me sarcastic expression.

Fine.

I still have my moments when it comes to their closeness.

“Evie and Pham both advised me not to fly solo all weekend – evidently the rumors regarding Bryn and I having an affair are running rampant-”

“Because every article out there just has to paint me as some sort of unfaithful slut.”

J.T. waves a hand in the air in reference to her outfit. “This isn’t exactly the attire of a saint.”

“Don’t make me send you to the med bay for body shaming.”

“Anyway,” he continues onward after grabbing of glass of champagne, “between the issues with the app development and the coding nightmares we’ve been facing at one of the brewing facilities and lessons with my golf instructor, shit just got away from me and I panicked.” The sip he steals is small. “Found the first woman in my phone that I’ve talked to in the past four months who’s never been in a newspaper or magazine and went for it.”

“She seems…” my voice trails off in search of the phrasing, “nice.”

“Boring,” the future Mrs. Wilcox declares. “And you deserve someone incredible and fearless and ready to be the Yates to your Sisko.”

To my surprise, he tilts his head in awe like fashion. “You think I’m Sisko material?”

“Of course.” Despite her complimenting of him, she presses herself tighter against me. “You’ve got what it takes to be a great commanding officer, human being, and battle star in the sack.”

He shakes his head in both amusement and bafflement during his stroll away. “So uncomfortable…”

I let a scolding stare fall to her to which she innocently beams. “What?”

The two of us aren’t provided with a moment to move courtesy of a familiar face taking the now vacant space. “You two look phenomenal per the norm.”

Offering Ava Danielson, the reporter who ran my first interview since taking over Wilcox Enterprises, a warm smile is easy. “Good evening, Ava.”

“Congrats on your engagement!”

As I have all night when someone expresses the sentiment, I politely nod, “Thank you.”

“You look like you’ve released your inner Bond girl,” compliments my fiancée. “Kudos.”

“You say the sweetest things!”
