He’s keeping quiet, even though I’ve told him that Harmony doesn’t mind if he sleeps over. All she wants is to take things slow with Cooper. But Carter is thoughtful like that.

“Hm. Not sure. Something feels off. My boobs feel like I’m getting my period, but it hasn’t shown up yet.”

I run my fingers around the skin and wince.

“Need me to rub it?” His voice is croaky and sexy first thing in the morning. But I’m not in the mood.

I tell him no and decide it’s time to book an appointment for a breast exam. And a pelvic exam, judging by how my period is late.

Late.

My stomach drops through the mattress.

“You okay, baby?”

I’ve been staring at the ceiling, but actually, I’m staring straight through Carter’s face.

“Your face just went pale. Is something wrong?”

Putting on a brave face, I tell him, “I’m great. Just feeling like I’m coming down with something.”

Carter leans in and kisses me on the lips. While his face is close to mine, he carefully studies me and pets my hair.

“I’ll go make you some tea with lemon and honey. That’ll fix you right up.”

Watching him pad barefoot out of the bedroom and move toward the kitchen to make my tea, I have a flashback from last night.

He told me there was nothing I could do that would scare him. And I believed him.

When he finds out what I think is going on with me, we’ll see if that statement is true after all.

Carter

The soft opening of Little Spoon is pressure enough on Summer, who hasn’t been feeling well.

Then there’s the added pressure of meeting Owen, who doesn’t seem to like Cooper and me very much.

“Where y’all from?” he asks, giving me a once-over.

“Gold Hill Investments,” says Cooper.

“Did y’all run out of room to build more parking lots up there or what?” Owen asks.

We can take whatever he dishes out. I’d be more worried if Summer’s older brother wasn’t skeptical of a pair of newcomers.

Summer and Harmony, however, are giving their brother the death glare.

Cooper keeps himself busy by bringing samples to everyone. I feel stuck, awkwardly babbling to Owen and his date, Daisy.

“We’ve been interested in investing in Fate for a while now. We see a lot of growth potential here,” I lie. Well, it’s not a total lie. We’ve been spending a lot of time in Fate helping the girls open the shop and discovering that we’ve been sleeping on Fate for too long. There’s much more room to grow here than in Gold Hill, which is almost built out.

He can tell I’m exaggerating and about to sweat through my clothes.

Harmony, thankfully, grabs Owen by the arm and pulls him away. “Hey, I need some heavy lifting in the back.”
