Jo leaned back against the arm of the couch. “You could never,” she replied. “I had literally just picked up the phone to dial up your number, when your call came through. Great minds think alike.” Jo turned off the TV and relaxed.

“Well, the reason I’m calling is to see how you’re doing?” Ali continued. “I know it must’ve been hard to see Vincent going home, and I guess I just wanted to check on you.”

Jo’s heart sighed. That was so sweet of her and reminded Jo that Ali might have had a rough tone when they first met in the hospital, but she really had a pure heart. All the more reason to be attracted to her.

“I’m doing alright. It’s silly, ya know? I mean he’s gotten through the transplant, responding well to meds, so it’s really only obvious that the next step would be to go home. I’m happy for him.”

“That’s my girl,” Ali cooed. Hearing Ali mutter those words brought a smile to Jo’s face. Even if she meant nothing by them, she enjoyed hearing them. “We all have patients we miss for various reasons. Whether they pass away or are released from our care. It’s how we get over them going that helps shape us as nurses.”

“You’re right.”

“I guess I just have one more thing,” Ali began. Jo perked up, anxiously waiting to hear what Ali had to say. “What are you wearing?”

Jo laughed hard. “Are you serious?”

Ali snickered from the other end of the line. “Let’s just say I’m bored.”

Jo giggled, then relaxed and mentally thought of those words. She looked down at her sweats and t-shirt. She had just come in from a walk. She wasn’t prepared for being cute. She reached up and pulled her ponytail down, so her hair fell to her shoulders.

“Ask me again,” Jo whispered, wanting the moment to be perfect.

“My dear, Jo. What are you wearing?” This time Ali’s voice came out in a sexy huff that left Jo instantly wet.

Jo grabbed her t-shirt from the bottom and pulled it up and over her chest, flinging it to the side as they both patiently waited for Jo to answer the heated question. “A bra,” Jo started. “Just whipped my shirt off so fast.”

“And your lower half?” Ali asked softly.

Jo kicked out of her sweats, then spread her legs and grabbed hold of her panties, she slowly pulled them down her legs until they were hanging off the couch. “Nothing,” Jo replied with a gasp. She closed her eyes and pictured Ali slowly moving on top of her.

“Imagine me sliding on top of you,” Ali softly spoke, ready to taste how wet you are. Are you wet, Jo?”

“Oh, yes!” Jo whimpered. She didn’t know how long she’d be able to sustain the heat within her, but she knew that she needed to satisfy and quench the thirst that she now had for Ali. There wasn’t any way she could ignore that much longer.

Ali

Ali paced outside of Julia’s office. She wasn’t sure why she had been called in to meet with her. Two weeks had passed since Jo and she had decided they wanted to try to make things work between them. It wouldn’t be easy because they would have to sneak behind everyone’s back, but in the end, it would be all worth it. They would be happy.

But now that she was summoned to see Julia, she feared that maybe someone had let the information leak. She trusted Jo and knew Jo would never tell anyone about their relationship. What happened between them should be no one else’s business. Not that anything had happened, just a few quick pecks in the hospital corridors when no one was around and late-night romps of phone sex. Ali wanted to take their intimate relationship and make it more physical, but she was settling with what they had. After all, those times between one another was just growing their bond and she couldn’t resist that.

The door opened, and Julia smiled. That was a good sign, right? “Come in.”

The talk about the promotion had been hushed over the past weeks, but she didn’t want to push anyone. She wanted to come in, do her job, and improve her work ethic, so that everyone could see she was the right person for the gig.

“Did I do something wrong?” she asked. It was a rip-off-the-band-aid sort of moment. The sooner she got it out there, the better she would feel.

“No. Not at all. I just wanted to commend you for the job well done with training the new nurses. It solidified that you would be a wise candidate for the promotion.” Ali grinned. Why was she worried? There was no sign that anyone knew about her and Jo. They had both kept the agreement to keep things professional and would continue it for as long as needed. “You get my props for that, and so I wanted to get the paperwork going for the promotion. It’s really just a formality. Others have expressed interest, but I am confident that you’ll do great.”

“Thank you, Julia. I appreciate that.”

Julia rifled through some paperwork. “Also, you will see that I’ll be monitoring you, sometimes almost shadowing you. It’s just to document what we see.”

Ali nodded, but her stomach clenched. “When does that start?” she asked.

“Probably not for another week.” Julia shrugged. “You have nothing to worry about. Again, it’s all a formality.”

Ali still couldn’t get rid of her tightening stomach, but she had just to relax and let it take its course. Like Julia said, it was all a formality, and she would trust the process and not let fears overcome her.

“Just sign these forms so we can start the process.” Ali briefly read over the forms but merely glanced at them. It was too much to wrap her mind around. If she got her own copy, then she would find time to focus on looking over them. “And one more,” Julia replied, sliding another one in front of her. She saw words like intimate relations, closely bonded, and fraternizing with employees. She swallowed her lump, signed the paper, and returned it to Julia. “I’ll email you the documents, but that is all.”
