She loved him, but she couldn’t give up a dream she’d worked so hard for on the chance he’d changed and would put her first.

When she didn’t respond, his shoulders slumped.

‘Give me tonight,’ he murmured, defeat underlying the pleading in his eyes.

She'd give him the next fifty years of her life if she could trust him, but she couldn't ignore the doubts. She needed time and space.

As if that would extricate Nick Mancini from her soul.

‘One night is all I’m asking for.’ He held up a finger. ‘If you’re heading back to London it will be our last night together for a while. Can you give me that?'

She wanted to refuse, to give him some meaningless spiel about packing and settling accounts with the local contractors Sell had used for her pitch, but she found herself nodding.

'Okay.'

Pulling her in for a swift kiss that left her head spinning with riotous confusion and her heart pounding, he said, 'You won't regret it.'

She already did.

Chapter Thirty-Three

Nick could've wasted time and energy cursing Darby Lloyd.

Instead, he put his plan into action.

When he initially heard what Britt said about her father, Darby's hatred obliterated Nick’s temporary guilt that his visit might have caused another stroke.

What sort of vile father ruined his only child’s happiness? Nick had never been Darby's favourite, especially when he'd started making it big in the district, but what about Britt? Didn't the old guy love her at all? Why the determination to wreck her relationship?

Something niggled at his conscience, wedged like a spur, digging and needling…something about Britt not knowing about Pa's death.

Nick had put it down to Darby not giving a damn about Pa, not bothering to inform Britt about something so trivial in his high-and-mighty world. But what if there was another reason behind her lack of knowledge?

For a woman hellbent on gaining a promotion she'd travelled halfway around the world to get it, why hadn't she spent more time with her father? An ailing father?

Nick hadn't given it a second thought, happily taking up every spare moment of Britt's time when she wasn't working, but now he thought about it…

Yeah, something wasn't right with Britt and Darby’s relationship, and when he'd asked her about it, had mentioned what Darby had said about not giving her anymore money because she'd married him, she'd paled before swiftly changing the subject. He could've pushed the issue but didn't want tonight to be about anything other than them.

Staring around the room, he hoped he’d done the right thing.

Would she remember?

Would it mean anything to her?

He'd told her he loved her but it wasn't enough. He'd seen it in every reluctant cell of her body.

Well, he was done talking.

Time to prove their marriage was real in every way.

He had no intention of letting her walk away thinking otherwise.

Chapter Thirty-Four

Unwelcome déjà vu washed over Britt as she stood outside her father's room.

She'd been a fool to come here, especially after everything that had happened, but something Nick had said about her father niggled.
