“I know, princess. I missed you too. So much more than you can ever imagine.” He kisses the top of her head and squeezes his eyes shut.

My heart swells as I watch the woman I love find peace with her past. For so long she’s been struggling with something and I think this was it. I wonder if having a relationship with Micheal again will heal some of her broken heart.

There’s a single knock on my front door before it swings wide open and Dad steps into the foyer with Mom following behind him.

“Owen! You’re supposed to wait for them to open the door. You can’t just barge into their home.” Mom scowls at him.

“Why not? They barge into my home all the time. Hell, last week Macy barged in while I was walking to our room after I worked out. Sunshine, she saw my nipples. I wasn’t wearing a shirt and she saw my nipples.” Dad flashes her a horrified look.

“Owen.” She pinches the bridge of her nose and shakes her head. I don’t know how she continues to be surprised by the things that come out of his mouth. “No one cares if they see your nipples. You’re a man.”

“No, that wasn’t the problem, Sunshine. She proceeded to tell me she has the same bars in her nipple piercings.” Dad does a full body shiver. “She’s like a daughter to me. I didn’t want to know that!”

“And I’m sure her dad didn’t want to hear about that either!” I hiss, motioning wildly to Micheal and Macy who are still hugging.

Dad stops in his tracks and stares at me with wide eyes. Mom covers her face with her hands and shakes her head like she’s embarrassed to even be here.

“Ah, Micheal Hayes, it’s so nice to meet you. I’m Owen Powell, Cord’s dad.” Dad steps forward and holds out his hand to shake, like he wasn’t just talking about Macy’s nipples.

“It’s nice to meet you too.” Micheal shakes Dad’s hand without letting go of Macy.

At this point, she’s holding onto him so tightly and I’m not sure if it’s to hide her tear-streaked face from my parents, or if she doesn’t want to let go of him. Knowing her, either one is a very believable option.

“This is my wife, Sunshine.” Dad places his hand on Mom’s lower back and guides her closer to him.

“It’s Carrie.” Mom rolls her eyes. “It’s nice to meet you. Macy is an amazing woman and we’re so incredibly lucky to have her in our lives.”

“Thank you for taking care of her when I wasn’t around to do it,” Micheal says softly. I don’t miss the way his voice wavers or how he’s blinking away tears.

Mom and Dad know a little bit of what happened to Macy, but they don’t know the full story and I’m not sure they ever will. I won’t force Macy to share her story, especially now that Micheal’s back in her life. He doesn’t need to keep paying for the sins of his past. If Macy and Liam can forgive him, no one else should hold it against him.

“Alright, princess. I’ll get out of your hair. Cord has my phone number if you want to contact me, otherwise I’ll call him and see if we can have dinner again.” He kisses her temple before letting go of her and stepping away.

I can tell it’s killing him to walk away, but I’m sure it’s uncomfortable now with my parents here. He feels like he’s intruding, even though he’s not. If anyone’s intruding it’s them.

“Cord, thank you again. I appreciate everything you’ve done to make today happen. I’ll never be able to thank you enough.” He swipes at his eyes and gives me a tight smile.

“You’re welcome. I’ll call you next week.”

He nods his head and quickly slips out the front door. It’s barely even shut when Macy throws herself into my arms and buries her face in my chest. Her body is shaking so hard I know Mom and Dad can see it.

“Owen, let’s go. You can call Cord in the morning to talk to him,” Mom says softly. Her gaze is locked on Macy and I can tell she wants to comfort my girl so much, but she knows that’s not what she needs right now.

“Ok. I’m sorry for barging in, Cord.”

“It’s fine. Just maybe next time read the room before you start talking about my girlfriend’s nipples.” I arch a brow at him.

“Fair enough.” He chuckles. “Call us if you or Macy need anything.” He stresses the word and I know it’s his way of saying he wants to be a part of this even though he knows he isn't wanted right now.

“Thanks, Dad.”

As soon as the door shuts behind them, I scoop Macy into my arms and carry her to our bedroom. It could be a while before she falls asleep or it could be five minutes, but I know when she does, she’s going to crash.

Setting her in the center of the bed, I help her strip out of her clothes and tug the blanket up to cover her. I follow suit and as soon as I'm lying next to her, she’s curling into my side and laying her head on my chest.

“I love you, Mace. Always and forever. I’m here for you.”

“I love you too,” she whispers.
