I let out another curse as I scanned the headline.

OUT OF CONTROL WITCH WINS WILDCARD BID FOR THE CIRCLE.

“I’ll take this nice light reading to my room for later,” I said. “I’m not up for more nonsense now.”

“Okay, well, here’s the other news.”

“Is this the bad news or the worse news?” I asked, accepting another letter on thick cardstock from Emmy.

“Honestly, I’ve no idea,” Emmy blurted. “But it’s not good.”

I opened the letter, read the words twice before they connected. “How can this be possible?”

“I imagine it’s legally possible,” Emmy said softly. “After meeting Dom, I’m sure he’s got a team of lawyers overseeing this deal. It’s the official letter that the apartment building is getting sold, Trixie, I’m sorry.”

“Two months?” I blinked. “We’ve now only got two months to officially move out of our home?”

Chapter 10

Dominic

“You did what?” I ran a hand down my face and tamped down the streak of curse words threatening to spill out.

“I thought this was what you wanted,” my lawyer replied evenly. “You’ve been asking me to push this deal through. We found a loop that enables us to sell this place without getting permission from your brother. So I moved forward and sent the notices out to the tenants. The two-month countdown is on.”

“Terrible move, Kellan.”

“I understand you’re not happy, Mr. Kent,” Kellan said, “but you’re going to have to be more specific if you want me to change something.”

“How’d you do it?”

My overpriced lawyer sucked in a breath. “It’s not pleasant.”

“No?” I asked. “Well, I’m already in a pissy mood, so let’s keep it rolling.”

“A body turned up in New York yesterday. Your brother is believed to be behind the murder,” Kellan said. “There’s a loophole in our contract that says if one of the stakeholders is on the run from the law—”

“Can you give me the CliffsNotes version?”

“Long story short, we’re able to sell the property since the police are looking for your brother. We are required to reserve Sebastian’s half of the proceeds in a trust until he’s caught and stands trial.”

“Your timing couldn’t have been worse.”

“Sorry for doing what you hired me to do,” Kellan said dryly.

“It’s not you,” I growled. “It’s personal.”

“I do apologize I don’t have mind reading powers.” Kellan sounded sincere, but after knowing him for decades, I could sense his underlying sarcasm. “The notices are sent out. The wheels are in motion. Would you like me to put a halt on the sale of the building?”

“Not yet.” I strode with agitation around my penthouse. “Give me a day or two to think about it.”

“Sure thing. Keep in mind the longer we wait the more difficult it will be to apply the brakes if you change your mind. We can’t jerk the residents of the building around that much.”

“No kidding.”

I hung up without giving Kellan much direction. All I could think about was the fact that the timing couldn’t have been worse for my lawyer to have discovered a loophole that’d allow him to deliver what were essentially eviction notices to the tenants. Tenants that included a witch who’d just been put through the wringer last night, and who was now being informed that her home was officially being sold.

I headed to my bedroom, threw the window open, and leaned my head into the fresh air. In a very non-stalkerish sort of way, I took in the scents of the world, sorting through the dirty notes of alley and garbage below, past the flood of fried food and baked goods from the restaurants on every corner of The Hollow, to the seventh-floor window from which I could isolate the witch’s scent with perfect accuracy. In a very non-stalkerish way.
