“It was fine.”

Maya shook her head. “Fine…only fine?”

I nodded, not sure what it was she was wanted me to say. I’d gone on one date. What answer was she expecting? Then I remembered Bexley commenting about how Maya’s mind worked, and I chuckled to myself.

“Is that why you didn’t call her yet?” she questioned, placing her hands on her hips.

From the corner of my eye, I caught Tate whispering something to Liam and Liam nodding his head. I couldn’t imagine what he’d said, but when I looked back at Maya, I could see the anger on her face. Why the hell was she angry at me? I’d done what she’d asked, I’d taken her on the date.

I could feel sweat forming on my brow. I shrugged. “I didn’t know I was supposed to follow up,” I answered, feeling the wrath of Maya coming down on me at any moment.

Suddenly, she was right in my face. “You didn’t know? How the hell did you not know to follow up with her? Isn’t there some sort of written word that you at least follow up and make sure they have a good time?”

I glanced over my shoulder at Liam, who sat there and shrugged his shoulders. Wasn’t he going to help me? Then I looked over at Joe, who did the same.

“Don’t look at them,” Maya gritted. “Why didn’t you call her?”

I pulled at the collar of my T-shirt then smiled. “It wasn’t because I didn’t want to call. It was more because I didn’t know what to say. I asked her the night of the date and she said she had a good time,” I murmured, really feeling the pressure right now. “I’m sorry. I’m just really rusty at this dating thing.”

“Rusty? Rusty?” Maya said, her voice getting more high-pitched the second time around.

“Yes, rusty,” I admitted.

“Well, do something about it, would you? I can’t stand to see my friend this upset!” she yelled, leaving the room.

Immediately, Liam stood up and took off after her, leaving us alone.

“What the hell is with your sister?” I questioned, looking over at Joe.

He was quiet for a moment, then he looked at me and shrugged his shoulders. “Don’t mess up her plans for great things.”

I walked into the emergency department carrying a single red rose and approached the main desk. Bexley worked around here somewhere. I just didn’t know exactly where. A woman sat behind the desk typing away on the computer. It took her a minute, but she finally looked up from the screen she was staring at and smiled.

“Can I help you?”

“I’m looking for Bexley Andrews.”

“Ah, yes. She just ran some files down to the other desk. She should be back soon. Why don’t you take a seat over there?” she said, smiling.

I nodded and made my way over to the bank of chairs and turned to sit down when I saw Bexley come around the corner talking with another girl. She’d just made it to the desk when she looked up and over at me.

I lifted my hand, waved, and smiled.

Her expression told me instantly she was surprised to see me. I’d only ever run into her one other time, and that was when I brought someone in for a psych evaluation. She finished her conversation, and I stood up as she made her way over to me.

“Hudson? What are you doing here?” she asked, grabbing hold of my jacket and pulling me into the corner away from the prying eyes of the other nurses.

“I um…” I glanced down at the rose in my hand and held it out for her to take. “I wanted to apologize for being so rusty. I should have called you, but I didn’t know what to say. So, I think it’s best if we go on another date. That way, I can make it up to you.”

“By taking me on a pity date?” She frowned, taking the flower from my hand and bringing it to her nose. “Did Maya put you up to this?”

I frowned, unsure of how to answer her. When she looked up at me, I could see laughter in her eyes.

“Relax, I was only kidding. Although, not about the Maya part. I can see her forcing you to do something like this,” she said, looking up at me as she smelled the rose again.

I smiled. “Well, if you want to look at it as a pity date, it would be you taking pity on me, not the other way around.”

She smelled the rose again. “This is really beautiful.”
