“He’s not…never mind. Here.”

Again, Indio was confronted with a parent of Sel. “Indio! Oh, thank you so very much for saving our son! I don’t know what we’d have done if you hadn’t been there. You’re a very sweet man!”

The phone was taken again as Sel complained, “To be fair, Mom, you don’t know if he’s sweet.”

“Hey,” Indio hissed at him.

“He’s okay,” Sel gave. “I’m gonna rest. Tell Dad bye for me, and stop worrying. I have a protector.”

“You do. I love you, son.”

“Love you, Mom.”

After the call was over, Indio pushed him playfully. “Dick!”

“You’re not sweet.”

“Maybe not, but you don’t tell your folks that shit.”

“Afraid?”

Indio shook his head, laughing. “I swear, you’re gonna get me killed yet.”

“Nah. I’ll just have to save you next time so we’re even. I don’t like owing you.”

“Hey, that’s right, you do owe me one! Get naked.”

“Here? You know these walls are thinner than the ones at the farmhouse.”

“True. Maybe we’ll just get some sleep on this tiny bed.”

Sel moved over to him again, melting into his arms. “I think that sounds like the best plan yet.”

Chapter Twenty-Seven

Neither of them had moved all day. Sel woke first, crawling out from the bed and Indio, padding out to the dining room to see Binx drinking coffee. “Hey! How are you?”

Sel sighed, “Better. I stopped shaking.”

Mal ran over to the table and sat by Sel. “You okay?”

“I am okay. I promise. Where is everyone?”

“Feds came and questioned everyone. They wanted to talk to you and Indio, but Dante fought them. You two needed some sleep.”

“My hero,” Sel drawled. “Funny thing was yesterday he was yelling at me for Indio.”

“He’s just worried about you,” Binx said, always the peacemaker. “Now he just loves Indio.”

“For saving me, I know. My parents too. They practically gave their blessing to marry him. That should make Indio run for the hills.”

Mal leaned over to whisper, “Good thing we’re surrounded by hills then, huh?”

Sel laughed with them. “I promised not to pressure him.”

“He just saved your life, Sel. Maybe grovel and kiss his…ass, dick, whatever part would be the most appropriate to kiss,” Mal said with a hard shrug.

“I’d love to.”
