I arranged our discarded clothing into a makeshift nest, gently pulling Katherine down to the floor and tucking her into the crook of my arm. “I’ll never tire of pleasuring you.” It was true. Making Katherine purr brought me a pleasure like no other. She smiled as I nestled my face into her hair. “Watching you lost in bliss is a Divine gift.”

Her fingers lazily traced along my shoulders, sending shivers through my body. “You, James, are the Divine gift. I thank the stars every day for crossing our paths.”

I paused at her words. Without Katherine, I never would have known love. She was a glimmering ray of light in my darkness. A beacon guiding me to my destiny. I owed the fates my gratitude, yet my mind found a way to slink back into the negative. “I fear the island will take our memories, and I’ll forget how much I’ve enjoyed watching you over the years. The first time I saw your naked perfection,” I groaned, remembering just how enticing she was in Teach’s tub that night on the Queen Anne. “How I longed to worship at your feet.”

She giggled at my compliment while a surge of blush spread across her cheeks. “James, that will never happen. Why would you forget?”

“Oh, but, kitten, it will; it’s only a matter of time.”

Kat looked up at me, her brows furrowed in question.

“For all of its beauty, Neverland has its shortcomings. Time on the island moves much slower than you’re used to. A single day here can equal many days, if not weeks, back in our realm. Along with that, your memories will fade much faster. Your trials with Blackbeard, your parents, and society’s misgivings against you will all soon be gone from your mind.”

“How is that possible?”

“How is anything on this island possible? It just is. You’ll go mad trying to figure out the enigma that is Neverland. Best to just accept it as it is and move on.” I reached for her face, searching her worrisome eyes. “Fear not, my dear. Our love is transcendent.” I gently kissed her soft lips, sealing them with a promise. “We will stand the test of time. You are mine, and I am yours. Neverland can have my memories. My heart—belongs to you.”

“I could never forget you, James. I won’t allow the island to take that from me.” She placed a chaste kiss on my lips before quickly changing the subject. “Shall we go looking for mermaids?”

“That was the plan until you decided to run. Let’s go,” I sighed. “I’m eager to see the joy on your face when you see the magic of the lagoon.”

Watching Katherine enjoy the mermaids warmed my cold-blooded heart. I was starting to believe we could actually be happy here in Neverland, even build a home of our own. I smiled at the thought of it. Kat seemed enthralled with the enchanting beauty of the island. Everything was falling into place. Maybe I would get my own happily ever after, after all. If only I could get eyes on Pan.

Peter had always been abreast of everything going on in Neverland. Why was my arrival any different? Surely, someone had spotted us by now. It wasn’t every day that a massive three-masted pirate ship anchored off the coastline. Yet nary a Lost Boy in sight. No telltale crowing, nothing. The anticipation was killing me. All these years—waiting. Was it too much to ask that the Divine give me a mere glimpse of the boy? It would be dark soon, and I was desperate for a taste, drowning in my obsession. I purposefully lingered within the outskirts of the Lost Boy’s camp, pointing out the hollowed-out trees that were chutes to the underground caverns Peter forced us to live in.

“You lived underground?” she questioned, squinting her eyes.

“Unfortunately—yes. It was utterly miserable, dark, damp, and earthy.” I shuttered, remembering the smell.

“And you got in through the trees? But…How?” She looked even more confused. “Wasn’t it tight…inside the tree? Did anyone ever get stuck?”

“We each had our own tree. And if you didn’t fit, Peter—would do things to you...to make you fit.”

“He would do things to you?” She pondered. “What kinds of things?”

“I’ll spare you the horrors. You don’t want to know. Let’s just say, once you fit, you’d do anything in your power to keep fitting.”

“The more I learn about this, Peter, the more I don’t like him.”

I’d never tire of hearing her say those words. Her validation had my demon purring with delight.

We fell into a companionable silence as we walked. My eyes constantly scanned the surrounding forest for any sign of Pan, purposefully stopping at places I remembered from my youth. So many things had changed over the years.

We stumbled across a small, run-down pixie colony. A few empty lanterns hung haphazardly from the branches of a large oak tree. And where there were lanterns, there were pixies. “Do you know what these are?” I asked, pulling one down.

Katherine shrugged her shoulders. “A lantern?”

“This is a faerie lantern. Pixies often use them as their homes. Lucky for us, this one appears to be vacant.”

“Does that mean pixies live in the area?” she asked, a smile spreading across her face.

“Shhh!” I looked at Kat and pointed just ahead. “There’s one now.”

She sat on a low-hanging branch, facing away from us, lost in her own company. Clearly, this was a gift from the Divine. It was too easy. I snuck up behind her and snatched her in my fist.

“James!” Katherine gasped. The smile was instantly gone from her face. “What are you doing?” Her brow furrowed, and anger bloomed in her stare.

“It’s just a pixie, relax. Haven’t you ever caught fireflies in a jar? It’s no different. It’ll be dark soon. We need her for light—and faerie dust.” I shoved the unsuspecting faerie into the lantern. A myriad of furious tinkling bells filled the air, and her voluptuous, luminescent form shifted to a bright red. I lifted the lantern, making eye contact with the little creature inside. “I suggest you change your attitude, or I’ll change it for you.” The little pixie huffed, slamming her fists at her sides. She took a defeated breath and paled to a brilliant golden light. “That’s better. Look at how pretty she is.” I smiled, staring at my curvy specimen.
