Chapter Two

~Coco~

Thomas practically ran from the office after shaking my hand and I turned a cold look to my father.

“What did you say to him?” I demanded, crossing the room and dropping into a chair.

“His dad is an old Army buddy and I hired the kid to work here for the summer. Then he’s going back to college,” Dad said.

“You didn’t answer my question.” I crossed my arms and glared at my Dad.

“I told him to stay away from you.” Dad shrugged as if it were no big deal.

“Oh my God.” I rolled my eyes. “I’m twenty-one years old, you don’t get to decide who I’m allowed to speak to.”

“The hell I don’t,” Dad argued. “Look, I know what guys that age are like. I won’t have him drooling over my daughter for a few weeks then taking off and breaking your heart.”

“You’re ridiculous,” I told him, but I couldn’t help smiling a little.

Daddy had always been overprotective of me. Probably a side effect from working on construction sites, which were notorious for rough guys and foul talk. But since he was the one who made me work there every summer, it was honestly his fault if some guy came along and corrupted his only daughter.

“What did you need?” Dad asked.

“Oh!” I shook my head. I’d been so distracted by Thomas I’d completely forgotten what I’d barged in for. “Mr. Langley called and wants to discuss more changes.”

“Christ,” my dad spat. “I’ll call him back. Thanks.” He picked up the phone then set it back down. “Constance, stay away from that boy.”

“Whatever,” I said, getting to my feet and walking out.

I decided right then and there that things were going to get interesting around the job site. That boy was hot and honestly, I couldn’t wait to see what kind of trouble he and I could get up to together.
