I expected broken windows and decrepit walls. I didn't expect the crown molding or marble tile at all. I certainly didn't expect it to be in this good of condition.

"You said the electrical and plumbing has already been replaced?" I asked.

Alejandro nodded. "That was the first thing I had repaired. I wanted the place up to code before we started working on the other stuff."

"What other stuff?" I asked as I turned in a circle. "This place looks to be in pretty good condition."

"It doesn't all look this good, Delancy. Many of the rooms still need work, especially the kitchen."

I glanced at him sharply. "The kitchen?"

"It was updated sometime in the 1960's, but not since then. I've ordered all new appliances and cupboards. They should be here in a day or two. I guess we're eating out until then."

"I know a few places in town that serve pretty good take-out," I said absently. "I'll give you the numbers. If you give them my name, they will give you a discount on delivery."

"That would be excellent."

"Why don't you join me in my study?" Alejandro held out his hand. "We can talk there."

It wasn't like I had anything better to do.

I took Alejandro's hand and then followed him down the hallway next to the stairs to a large wooden door. Once we stepped inside, Hugo pulled the door shut behind us.

Alejandro gestured to one of the chairs in front of his desk. "Have a seat."

I took the seat and then glanced around the study. It was spacious as studies went. There was a full wall of floor to ceiling bookshelves to the right of Alejandro's desk and two large windows and a set of doors leading out to the patio on the left. A couch set and a fireplace was behind me. More bookshelves and some cabinets were situated behind the desk area.

In this room, there was still crown molding, but the floors were dark wood instead of marble. The trim on the windows and the patio doors matched the crown molding and floors.

It was nice. A little too "old school" for my tastes, but it wasn't my study.

"We can talk freely in here," Alejandro said. "The room is wired to prevent anyone on the outside from hearing us, even with listening devices."

My eyebrows shot up. "Is that a problem?"

Alejandro's smile was almost thin lipped. "It can be."

"Oh."

"I learned a lot while working for my grandfather. One of the things he was adamant about was people listening in on his conversations. He had his entire hacienda wired to prevent anyone from listening in or jamming his systems. I plan to do the same here, but I've only gotten the study and our master suite wired so far."

"You wired our bedroom?"

Alejandro chuckled. "Pillow talk is a thing."

I wouldn't know.

"The outside doors have all been replaced with reinforced steel and over the next few weeks, all of the windows in the house will be replaced with bulletproof glass."

"Jesus, you're making this place into a fortress."

"Yes, I am, and I have good reason to."

I gulped hard. "Because you are a mobster?"

Alejandro nodded. "We are originally out of Spain, but I was sent here from my grandfather's cartel in Columbia. Those papers Martinez gave me at the wedding were the papers confirming my position as head of the family in Brooklyn."

Holy crap! I really was married to a mobster.
