In a way, it was a relief. I hadn’t realized until right now how much I thrived on having my picture taken. But that meant hours of pampering to make sure I looked just right. And now…now there was no one to impress. I didn’t have to do my hair or my makeup. I felt completely naked, and I wasn’t sure I was comfortable with it. But it wasn’t like I had a choice in the matter.

“You’re staring,” Brock stated.

Shaking my head, I tried not to think about everything I was missing out on. It didn’t matter what I wanted. It was clear they weren’t going to take me home anytime soon. Besides, Brock needed his rest, and he wouldn’t be able to get any on the run.

“Are you comfortable? Do you need anything?”

His lips twitched. “Why? Are you going to be my nurse?”

I shifted uncomfortably, not sure of what to do. “I?—”

“Come here.”

He held out his hand to me, beckoning me closer. I could really use the comfort right now, which was strange, considering I wasn’t the one who was injured. I walked around the first bed and stood between the two, staring down at his hand.

“Yes?”

He chuckled, snatching my hand in his. “You should lay down and rest.”

“Oh, I?—”

He quirked an eyebrow at me. “It’s clean. I promise.”

I studied the sheets and old bedspread. The room was so dated, I wasn’t sure I wanted to risk it, but my feet hurt and I couldn’t deny it would be nice to lay down.

“Take a chance. It won’t kill you.”

Laying down on the sheets might not kill me, but it could seriously damage my skin. I’d already felt the sheets. They weren’t silk like I was used to, and there was no satin pillowcase to keep my hair frizz-free. But it wasn’t like I could stay on my feet all day. I’d have to sit down eventually.

Decision made, I walked around the bed and climbed in. I grimaced at the scratchy feel against my skin, but the moment I laid down, my body sagged into the mattress.

“Not so bad, is it?” Brock asked.

“It’s…not terrible. My hair won’t be thanking me.”

“Your hair is already a mess. We’ll get that fixed, but for now, relax.”

The problem was, I didn’t know how. Sure, my body was exhausted and doing its own thing, but my head couldn’t shut down. I kept thinking about what everyone was saying right now. Was my father worried? How was this affecting Bryce’s image?

“You know what you need?”

“A spa? A luxurious bath with lavender salts and bubbles? A tall glass of champagne?”

A low rumble shook the bed slightly as he laughed. “I was going to suggest a good movie.”

I grimaced at the thought. “I don’t remember the last time I watched the television.”

“That’s because you have your priorities all wrong.”

“Really. Please tell me more,” I said sarcastically.

“See, you’ve never truly learned how to relax and enjoy a day.”

“Not that I’m complaining. I really do appreciate you kidnapping me and forcing me to relax in a rundown motel, but I think we have different ideas about what is enjoyable.”

“I’ll give you that. This isn’t exactly where I’d normally take you.”

Turning to face him, I rested my head on the palm of my hand as I looked into his bright blue eyes. “And where would you take me?”
