“Well, definitely someplace fancier than this. Probably the Holiday Inn Express.”

I grimaced at the name. “I doubt anything named Express could be that good.”

He chuckled again, shifting to see me better. “Okay, it’s not the Ritz, but it’s what normal people consider a decent hotel. They have nice rooms that are spacious and no bed bugs.”

“It already sounds better than I imagined,” I said sarcastically.

“And they have breakfast downstairs in the morning buffet style.”

“That doesn’t sound very appealing.”

“It’s actually very good. They have pancakes and waffles. The eggs aren’t the best, but their sausages are pretty good.”

“Good sausages aren’t doing much to sway me in your argument.”

“There are a dozen other hotels I could take you to, and you wouldn’t approve of any of them. Do you know why?”

I rolled my eyes, already knowing where he was going with this. “Because I’m a spoiled brat who only wants the best.”

“Actually, I was going to say because none of them have the facial cream you want.”

I smiled, despite feeling like he had me pegged as the princess who couldn’t survive without her ivory tower. I wasn’t ashamed of liking the finer things in life. But as I laid here in this bed in the rundown motel, I found myself wondering if those finer things were truly making me happy.

“So, you ready to watch a movie with me?”

“I guess,” I sighed. “What are we watching?”

“A classic. You’re gonna love it.”

“What’s it about?”

“Blowing shit up. What else would I watch?” he said, grinning at me.

I wasn’t sure I would like this movie. My adventure in the minivan was enough to dissuade me from his life, but since he was the injured one, I decided not to argue. The movie was called Die Hard. I thought the title was enough to convince me it wasn’t my thing.

But by the time the first twenty minutes was up, I was fully engaged in the movie, unable to tear my eyes away, even when Fox walked in the room with food. Brock picked up the remote and paused the movie just as it was getting to a good part.

“Hey! I was watching that!”

Brock cocked his head at me, shooting me a knowing look. “I’m sorry, were you enjoying that?”

I scoffed. “Enjoying? I doubt that’s the word I would use. But what else am I supposed to do in a place like this?”

“Well, you could eat some food since you skipped a meal the last time we stopped.”

I shot him an irritated look, snatching the bag out of his hand. “The last time we stopped, Fox ate weeds and parts of a pig I don’t need to think about. Not to mention that we were chased by a bunch of crazy bikers.”

“And you drove for the first time,” Brock pointed out. “You should be proud of yourself.”

A small hint of pride shot through me. I was proud of myself, even if I was traumatized from ever riding in a vehicle again. I had done something that I never thought I would do. I might have even enjoyed it if it weren’t for the men shooting at us and the fact that I nearly killed Brock and Fox.

“So, what are we eating?” I asked, opening the bag.

“Chinese food,” Fox grinned. “Best in the area. At least, that’s what the locals said.”

My nose scrunched up in distaste. “Chinese food?”

“Yeah, sweet and sour chicken, beef with broccoli, Szechuan chicken, fried rice…all the good stuff,” Fox said, tearing into his own bag.
