“Look, I can get you a vehicle, but I’m not getting you a palace to sleep in. Tell her to rough it.”

“Yeah, I get it,” I sighed. “Sometimes, you have to go through something rough to truly understand who you are. Like a tornado.”

He was silent. “I’ll see what I can do.”

“Where’s the princess?” Fox asked as he walked back into the room.

“Still in the bathroom,” I muttered, taking issue with the tone in his voice. “You don’t need to call her a princess.”

“Oh, I do. Nobody talks to my guys like that.”

“She’s not used to this. Cut her some slack.”

“I’ll cut her some slack when?—”

“Fox!” I snapped, cutting him off. “Would you stop?”

He walked over to me, setting the bag on the bed beside me. “Fine, but if she can’t hack it, I have no problem setting her straight.”

“She’ll be fine. It’s an adjustment period for her.”

“Yeah? What’s going to happen when we figure this out and she goes home?”

I pretended not to understand what he was talking about. “Then she goes home. That’s the plan.”

“And what about your broken heart?”

I rolled my eyes at his dramatics. “Fox, you’re acting like we’re a couple. That’s not even close to what we are.”

“Really? You went against Cash and your team all because she means nothing to you? What do you feel in here?” he asked, tapping my chest over my heart.

“I feel like I could use a bacon sandwich.”

A grin split his lips. “Me too, but you know that’s not what I was talking about.”

“Since when are you a love guru?”

“Always have been. But, as usual, no one listens to me. I happen to be quite experienced in the name of love.”

“You stalked Anna her whole life. I doubt that counts.”

He sat up in shock. “It totally counts. To love a woman that long and always stay in the shadows? That takes some strength and dedication. Same as what you did.”

“All I did was take her.”

“Correction. You saved her from a fate that has yet to be determined. You could have walked away and hoped she was alright. That’s what everyone else did. And do you know why?”

“Please. Enlighten me.”

“It’s because you feel something for her. Now, if only we could get her to see it too,” he said, tapping his lip. “We need a plan.”

“Fox, there is absolutely nothing about this so-called plan that has worked out so far.”

“Right, but that’s because we were only thinking about getting her out of there. Now, we need to switch course and figure out how to make her see how amazing this life is.”

I looked around the room, then down at my stomach. “This. This is what you want to use to convince her that life is so great with us.”

“Well, obviously, we have to patch you up a bit. You’re looking a little pale and bloody.” His eyes brightened and I got a bad feeling about it. “She needs to see.”
