“Yes, and then he was fired and came home.”
“And you don’t find it at all strange that her father so quickly fired us? Not let us go. Fired us. Got us out of there as fast as possible. He’s hiding something.”
“Or you want him to be hiding something. This is about the woman.”
I rolled my eyes at that. “Boss, I’ve never been led around by a woman.”
“Yeah, you never fucked a woman on the job either. I guess there’s a first time for everything,” he snapped.
Man, he was really angry about this. “You know, I sort of thought you would take this differently.”
“Yeah? How did you see it going?” he said angrily.
“You know, something along the lines of being proud of me for sticking to my guns and following my instincts?”
“Is that a question?”
“That depends. Are you agreeing with me?”
“What?”
“Huh?”
“You’re not making any sense!”
“I make perfect sense. You’re just not willing to see it at the moment. But if you took the time to see it, you’d see it.”
“See, this is how I know you’re with Fox. Only he can tangle a web of words and twist everything to make no sense.”
“Fox isn’t even here,” I argued, not liking being pegged in a hole like that.
“Where is he?”
“Getting supplies.”
“Yeah? Does that have anything to do with the fact that you’re bleeding out?”
I cringed, remembering that the trackers could also be used to track our vitals. “Bleeding out is a strong use of words.”
“Really? Then how would you describe what I’m seeing on the monitors?”
“Uh…a slight increase in bodily discharge.”
“Your body isn’t supposed to discharge anything!” he shouted.
I pulled the phone from my ear, wincing at how loud he was getting. “Technically speaking, that’s not true. You discharge all sorts of things. Sweat, skin cells, bacteria, mucus…and that’s not even including the normal bodily functions that occur on a daily basis in the form of?—”
“Brock!”
“Yeah, boss?”
“Shut the fuck up.”
“Right. Was there anything else?”
“Get her home right now.”
