“You got what you wanted. Are you reconsidering my job offer?”

“I’m pretty sure IRIS wouldn’t like that.”

“But Jane would,” Rae grinned. “Don’t you just love how a plan comes together?”

“Rae,” I said in warning.

“Hey, a girl has to live vicariously through others. Now that Duke and I are married, it’s like nothing exciting ever happens. You know, I haven’t been shot at in ages. I’m beginning to think this is the end of the line for me.”

“Rae, it’s been two weeks since you were last shot at.”

She quirked an eyebrow at me. “Has it been that long? Anywho, my part is done. I delivered the bad news. Oh, and boss…one last thing I should probably tell you…”

“I know I’m not going to like this.”

“Wren may have been abducted from her house last night. See ya later!”

My eyes slid from the door to where IKE sat. “So, about that job...”

BROCK

For a moment, I thought she might actually make it. Her eyes were bright, but they dimmed quickly. She took off for the bathroom, dry-heaving seconds later.

Sighing, I laid back. “Well, it was worth a shot.”

My phone buzzed in my pocket and I pulled it out, wincing when I saw Cash’s name. I didn’t want to answer it, but I had my tracker in. It wasn’t like I could hide from him.

“Boss,” I answered as casually as possible, hiding the pain.

“Tell me why the fuck your whole team was knocked out.”

“Say what?” Yeah, I was playing the stupid card.

“Your whole team, Brock. Yet, somehow, you managed to escape whoever rendered them useless. And you’re in the middle of fucking nowhere. Please tell me you’ve been kidnapped.”

“I’ve been kidnapped,” I deadpanned.

“And that you have Wren with you. She’s been taken alongside you, and you’re doing everything you can to escape. You’ll return her by tomorrow.”

“Wren was taken alongside me and we’re doing everything possible to escape.”

He paused. “And you’ll return her tomorrow.”

I scratched the back of my neck, not sure how to approach this. “Gee, I don’t know, boss. The guy who has us is kind of?—”

“Crazy? Delusional? Fucking Fox!”

“Uh—What answer do you want me to give you?”

“Bring her back!”

“I can’t do that, boss. She’s safer here.”

I heard Wren moaning from the other room and hoped Cash didn’t hear it.

“The job is over, Brock. Move on.”
