No, not even close. These…strange feelings I was having were simply a combination of lust and desire. But they would fade, just like my Jimmy Choos if they were left in the sun on a hot day.

“You’re not even the least interested in what that would feel like?” Fox asked in astonishment. “To know that you love someone so much you would commit the ultimate act of betrayal against human nature? You wouldn’t risk staining your soul for all eternity to save the person you love?”

“No man is worth that.”

Fox swung his head back to Brock, shaking his head. “Man, I think you got this one wrong.”

He bent over with a sigh, waiting for me to get on his back, but my eyes were glued to the intense look on Brock’s face as he considered Fox’s words. But when he saw me staring at him, his face cleared and he shot me a sexy grin.

“You ready for your spa, princess?”

I wasn’t sure why it bothered me that he called me a princess, but as I climbed onto Fox’s back, I felt a pang of hurt stab me in the chest.

It wasn’t a spa. Not even close.

The motel sign had only three lights working and two of them were flickering. Still, how bad could it be? A shower and bed sounded amazing at the moment. I could worry about their spa services after a good night’s sleep.

“Finally,” I groaned, yawning as Fox carried me to the front desk in the lobby. Granted, it was a lot more rundown than most of the places I’d stayed in, but beggars couldn’t be choosers. Fox set me down in a chair and I groaned in pain. “Ugh, you have no idea how painful that trip was.”

Fox slowly turned and looked at me. “Yes, it must have been difficult.” He turned back to the lady at the front desk. “One room, please.”

“One room?” I scoffed. “Two, we need two rooms.”

“One,” he snapped.

“How many nights?”

“Not sure yet.” He tossed some money on the counter and nodded to the lady as she slid a key across the counter to him.

“Could you have some hot towels sent up?” I asked. “My feet are killing me. Ooh, and maybe some champagne. I need to forget about the last few hours.”

She looked at me with a grin on her face. “Of course. Anything else?”

She was so nice. “I wouldn’t mind some new clothes from the boutique.”

Her eyes flicked to Fox for a second, then back to me. “I’ll get right on that.”

“Let’s go,” Fox said, turning for the door.

“Aren’t you going to carry me?”

“The room is right across the lot. You can make it.”

He walked out, abandoning his earlier chivalry. Huffing, I stood, wincing at the pain in my feet as I followed him outside. Brock was leaning up against the side of the building, pressing his hand to his side. He looked rather pale and exhausted, but they had to have a doctor on staff. Most hotels had someone they could call.

I followed them across the lot to the single room Fox got. I still didn’t understand why we had to share one room. They couldn’t spring for the extra expense? I hated when people were cheap.

But it was worse than I thought. When Fox opened the door, I was shocked to see the rather plain bedding and brown carpet. “Who puts brown on the floor? This hotel really needs a new designer. Ugh, and the drapes!” I said, spinning to look at the window. “Disgusting.”

“Yeah, I’m sure they’ll take your thoughts into consideration,” Fox said, shoving past me. “Sit down.”

I sighed and moved to the bed. “Gladly.”

“I wasn’t talking to you,” he snapped.

Fox seemed unusually angry. I hadn’t seen this side to him yet, and now I was wondering what he had to be so upset about. He was the one who kidnapped me!

“Lay down before you fall on your ass. Wren, go to the front desk and see if you can get a bowl, alcohol, and a needle and thread.”
