“Fox, give her a ride,” Brock said.
“Really? You’re gonna let me take your girl?”
He rolled his eyes. “Just do it.”
“Take me where?”
Fox turned around and bent over. “Hop on, sweet cheeks.”
“Fox,” Brock growled.
“What? Having a soothing, friendly tone is the way to get her to trust me.”
“Did you get that out of the serial killer’s guide?” Brock retorted.
Fox looked at him in confusion. “Don’t be silly, man. I made it up myself.”
“I am not riding on your back,” I snapped.
“Why not?” Fox actually looked hurt that I was refusing to accept his help.
“Because I’m in a nightie and you would have to…to have your hands on my thighs.”
“Yeah, but I’m married.”
I scoffed at that. “Like that stops any man.”
“Uh, it stops me. I happen to love my wife very much,” Fox retorted.
“Oh, please. No man is ever faithful. It’s just not realistic to expect a marriage to function where both parties are devoted only to each other. One of them eventually strays and the other is either hurt or does the same.”
Fox looked at Brock strangely. “You don’t think that’s accurate, do you?”
Brock shrugged. “In her world.”
“Well, it wouldn’t happen in mine,” Fox said confidently.
“How can you be so sure?”
“Simple. I’d just kill anyone who came near Anna. You ready to go?”
I scoffed at his flippant tone. “You’d just kill anyone?”
“Yes. Wouldn’t you kill for the man you loved?”
“I’m not in love with anyone.”
“Not even your fiancé?”
“Please, that’s just an arrangement that benefits us both.”
“That’s just sad. How can you go through life never really knowing a great love?”
“Because I value comfort and money above love. Call me stupid or crazy, but do you see me right now? I’m in a nightie on the side of the road and my feet are torn up! This is no way to live!”
Fox shot Brock a look I couldn’t decipher. For a moment, it looked like Brock was dejected or something, but that couldn’t be. We’d slept together and had passionate sex, but it was nothing more than that. He didn’t love me, and I certainly didn’t love him.
Right?
