But she was already shaking her head at me. “If you can’t tell me what the threat is, I won’t leave.” She shook her head, chuckling slightly. “I won’t leave at all. This is my home. I have a life here. I can’t just pick up and walk away because of your overactive imagination.”

“Why? Afraid you might miss a lunch?” I argued. “Tell me one thing you’ll actually miss.”

Her lips pursed as she stared at me. This might not be the best way to get her to listen.

She pushed out of her chair and slowly walked over to me. “Don’t pretend you know me. We slept together a few times. And it was a mistake.”

My chest felt like it caved in at the declaration, but I wasn’t sure why. She was right. We meant nothing to each other.

“You were what I needed at the time, but that’s over now. You can leave.” She strode past me to her bed, taunting me in her tiny outfit. It was almost as if she wanted to be sure I knew what I was missing.

There was no need for the reminder. I was well aware of what I was missing.

“Wren—”

“You can shut the door on your way out.”

I clenched my jaw, wanting to argue further. But she wouldn’t listen. She wasn’t in the right frame of mind to hear me out, and that was my fault. I had scared her in the basement instead of reassuring her. Now wasn’t the time to expect her to understand that.

“Call me if you change your mind.”

I hoped she would call me back with every step I took toward the door. I waited for her to call out to me, but it never came. This was wrong on so many levels. I had to find a way to get her out of here. I would regret it every day if I left.

I stormed downstairs and headed for the back yard to clear my head. We’d be leaving in just a few hours. That wasn’t long to come up with a new plan. And even worse, I knew I was on my own. Lock wouldn’t go along with it, not when he’d been fired. If I was going to do this, it would all come down to me.

“Whatcha doin’?” Fox asked, strolling up to me in the dark.

I heard the telltale crunching of Funyuns and pinched the bridge of my nose. “Fox, I’m not in the mood right now.”

I was standing outside, trying to regain my cool and figure out a solution to the problem. So far, I’d come up with figure out who’s behind all this. It was not going well, to say the least.

“Because you’ve been ordered to leave your lady love?”

“Fox, I’m serious. Now’s not the time for this shit.”

“Talk to Foxy. Tell him what’s running through that crazy head of yours.”

I laughed at the idea that he thought my head was the crazy one. “You want to know?”

“That’s why I asked.”

“Fine. We’ve been ordered to leave, and Lock is ready to pick up and go, but there’s something else going on here.”

Through the darkness, I saw the evil glint in his eyes. “Ah, a mystery is afoot.”

“The game’s afoot,” I corrected. “Someone else was trying to break onto the property tonight. I have no idea who or why. I’m guessing they were using the fucker in the basement as a distraction. There’s no way he broke in on his own.”

“Ah, the great mysteries of the world. As old as the Plain of Jars.”

“The what?”

“The Plain of Jars.” He scoffed out a laugh. “Tell me you’ve heard of the Plain of Jars!”

“Clearly, I haven’t. What gave me away? Was it the dumbfounded look on my face?”

“See, this is what I love about you,” he chuckled. “You’re all ooh, and I’m all ahh. And somehow, we just…” His face scrunched up and then he grinned, nodding at me. “Ya know?”

“No, I don’t know.”
