“He must not have disarmed the back door…”

This was a waste of time. It didn’t take a genius to figure out that this guy knew nothing. He wasn’t like other hardened criminals. He was just an obsessed man who wanted a photo. Whether that was with Wren or Ben, I didn’t know, but he wasn’t the one behind the break-in.

And if I didn’t figure out who was really trying to break in, Wren’s life could seriously be in danger.

I snuck to her room, hoping she wasn’t still passed out. Lock would kill me if he found out I was here. I put the camera on a loop, but it wouldn’t be long before he figured out what I’d done. I tapped lightly on the door before turning the handle and slipping into the darkness.

Her silhouette on the bed instantly calmed me, but that calm instantly vanished when she suddenly reached out and turned on the light. The look on her face was enough to chill the blood coursing through my veins.

“Why are you sneaking into my room?”

The anger in her voice instantly put me on edge. “I came to check on you.”

“Why? So you could scare me to death again?”

“Wren, I told you?—”

“Don’t you dare try to talk your way out of this one. You left me locked up in the basement!”

“I was checking on the?—”

“Yes, the threat,” she snapped. “I heard all about it from my father.”

“Then you know,” I hedged, hoping he had finally filled her in on what was actually going on.

“Of course I know. My father doesn’t lie to me.”

“No, he just uses you.”

She tossed off the covers and stood up in only her negligee. I tried my best not to stare at her gorgeous body, but I knew what it was like to be tucked between those legs. I could still feel her silky skin under my fingers and her soft strands of hair wrapped around my fist. It was hard to ignore all that.

“Did you get your fill?” she said snidely.

My eyes snapped to hers, meeting her angry gaze. “Look, we need to talk.”

“There’s nothing to discuss.” She walked over to her vanity, sitting down on her chair. “My father explained everything. It was a smart move. We both got what we wanted.”

“So, you wanted him to use you like that?”

“It was all to make the headlines about Bryce go away. And it worked.”

“But that’s the thing. I think something else is going on here.”

“Like what?” Her voice was filled with frustration and a hint of exhaustion. If I didn’t make her see what I saw, I wouldn’t be able to convince her to come with me.

Come with me? Was that what I was trying to do?

It was the only way. I couldn’t protect her in her father’s house. He didn’t see the threat, and he wouldn’t allow us to stay. She was vulnerable here.

“There’s someone else trying to get to you. I’m sure of it.”

She turned, placing her hand on the back of her chair as she faced me. The bored look on her face told me this wasn’t going to be easy. “Fine. Let’s say you’re right. What do you plan to do about it?”

“Keep you safe.”

“And how are you going to do that?”

“I’ll take you away from here. We can go back to where I live. I’ll figure it out?—”
