“Which means Wren could still be in danger.”

His head snapped up to meet my gaze. “She’s the leverage.”

“Exactly.”

Brock checked his watch, then growled in frustration. “She won’t be at the house that much longer, Cash. She’s going to dinner.”

“She has security with her.”

“But if these guys want the cash, the best time to grab her is when she’s out of the house. We need the names!”

“Rae’s still working on it,” I said, holding out my hands in a soothing gesture. I felt like a fucking babysitter. “You have to calm down.”

“I need to go to her.”

He stormed toward the door, but I quickly blocked his exit. “If you go over there, Ben will know you’re still working for me. Any access we have will be denied.”

“I have to get to her! She’s not safe!”

“We’ll keep an eye from a distance. You can’t go running in there. You’ll ruin everything!”

I could tell I was losing him. Minute by minute, he was spiraling out of control. How did this become my life?

“Fine, but we need vehicles in front and tailing her.”

“We will,” I agreed. “I promise you, we’ll keep her safe.”

“We won’t get within fifty feet of her while she has security around her.”

“Then, neither will anyone else,” I reassured him. “This is the way it has to be. We keep our distance and follow her. That’s all we can do until Rae finds out who’s after her.”

“Let’s get ready for this dinner. We’ll keep an eye out from across the street.”

I started handing out orders, hoping to distract Brock enough that I wouldn’t have to worry about him running out the door and blowing the mission. He was wound so tight—something I understood all too well. When Eva was in danger, I would have killed anyone who got in my way.

The difference was that I stuck by Eva through everything. I could see the regret in his eyes. The moment he returned her, she became a target again. But it wasn’t his fault. There was no way he could have known what her father was hiding or that it would come back to haunt him.

If anything happened to Wren, he would never forgive himself, and my plan would be shot to hell.

“You ready?” I asked, clapping him on the shoulder.

He nodded and followed me to the parking garage. Everyone split off to their rented vehicles. All except for Brock. He was coming with me where I could keep an eye on him.

I couldn’t leave Brock alone for a second. After watching him all afternoon, I knew he would do something stupid in an instant. He’d probably kidnap Wren again, and I knew Fox would be waiting in the wings to play his role.

“You listen to me,” I said as we got in the vehicle. “No funny business. We follow and observe. We only move if there’s a credible threat. Am I understood?”

“Yes.”

He wouldn’t look at me, which was my first clue that things would go south tonight. I had to hope he could hold it together. Our best shot of keeping Wren safe was to not overplay our hand. The moment she saw us, it would all be over. The security detail would swarm and make sure we couldn’t get within ten feet of her.

“What are you thinking?” I asked as I pulled up outside of Wren’s house.

I made sure to park a few car lengths away, making it harder for anyone to spot us. Of course, if someone was already watching, we’d be screwed. But I had the feeling that whoever was after Wren would make their move away from her house.

“I’m thinking I shouldn’t have sent her back.”

“You couldn’t have known?—”
