“If there’s anything I can ever do, it’ll be on the house. We take the security of you and your family very seriously.”

“Does that extend to other things as well?” he asked, giving me an in.

“Of course.” I paused for effect. “Before I fired Mr. Patton, he told me someone broke into the house and something may have been compromised. A computer file.”

“Yes, I’ve had my team working on it.”

“If you’d like, I can have my people work on it. For no charge, of course.”

“I’m not sure that’s necessary. I have some of the best minds working on it.”

“All due respect, I have a few hackers on my payroll. Their work is superlative. You could have answers by tomorrow.”

“Would they need access to the house?”

“No, just some basic information on what was taken.”

He didn’t look too pleased with my answer.

“Sir…” I paused again. “If you have anything that could be compromised by this information getting out, it would be best we move on this immediately.”

I thought maybe I pushed too hard too fast, but after a moment of indecision, he nodded. “Perhaps, you’re right. About five years ago, I made a deal with Holbrook Industries. It was very lucrative for both companies. However, Aaron Holbrook was holding back information on another merger that was set to conclude in the coming months. The deal would have fallen through if certain information got out.”

“And what was that information?”

“Mr. Holbrook had embezzled five hundred million dollars from his own company. I may have acquired that money and hid it in a few shell corporations.”

“And now Holbrook is trying to get it back,” I surmised.

“Actually, Holbrook died two years ago in a car accident.”

“Who’s after the money?”

“That is the question I need answered.”

I nodded. “We’ll get to work on it right away. Is there anything else I need to know?”

I saw the flicker in his eyes right before he lied to me. “That’s all.”

Nodding, I turned for the door. “You’ll hear from me with an update by tomorrow morning.”

“Mr. Owens…”

I faced him one last time.

“If this information were to get out, I don’t think I need to tell you what would happen to your company.”

I gritted my teeth at the threat. If I could, I would pull out my gun and put a bullet between his eyes right now. But until I knew who was after the money, the threat was still very much alive when it came to Wren. And there was that pesky little fact that murder was considered socially unacceptable.

“Understood.”

I stormed out of the house and to the waiting car, sliding into the back seat where Brock was waiting.

“So, what did you find out?”

“That you should have put a bullet in Ben’s head the moment you walked through the door.”

“So, he stole five hundred million and now someone’s after that money,” Brock said, pacing the room. “Ben would know if the money was gone, so they must not be able to access the cash.”
