“Thank you, Richard. I appreciate the help.”

“Mr. Patton, it may interest you to know that Ms. Wren will be at The Golden Pineapple tonight with Mr. Hargrove.”

“The Golden Pineapple? Is that?—”

“A very expensive restaurant,” Richard filled me in. “It’s known in the area as the place to go for special occasions…”

His implication was enough to set me on edge. He was going to propose to Wren tonight. And if I didn’t stop her, she would end up married and out of my reach. “Thank you, Richard.”

“You’re very welcome, Mr. Patton.”

I hung up and turned to the cabbie. “Back to the hotel.”

“But we just came from there.”

“I know. I need to go back.”

The cabbie sighed and turned down the next street, heading back from where we just came.

Bryce was proposing already. Soon, she would be out of my reach. And then there was the issue of the security team at the house, not protecting Wren, but going through Ben’s computer.

We squealed to a stop in front of the hotel and I tossed money at the cabbie. As I rushed upstairs, I ran through all the possible scenarios for tonight. I couldn’t ambush her at the house, and if there was security around, I would never get in to see her. I would have to try and intercept her on the way to the restaurant.

I stormed into the room, chest heaving as everyone turned to face me. “He’s going to propose tonight.”

“That’s not good,” Edu said.

“No shit. Ben hired security for Wren, but Richard said they’re watching her.”

“That’s what security does,” Cash said.

“No, he said he got a strange feeling from them. He said it’s like they’re waiting for an opportunity.”

“An opportunity to take her?” Cash asked.

“Or use her? I have no idea. But Richard said men are at the house going over everything in the office. Something was taken. We need to find out what these guys were after.”

“They already have it,” Cash pointed out.

“We need to find out what they took. If it was something valuable enough, Wren could still be in danger.”

I could kick myself for returning her. I thought it was over, but I just handed her back over to her father. If I put her in more danger, I would never forgive myself.

“Ben won’t let us back in the house.”

“Maybe we don’t need to get back in the house,” Edu piped up.

“How else would we find out what was on that computer?” I asked.

Edu turned and faced Cash with a grin. “We send in the bossman.”

“Why would I go in?”

“To make your apologies for your employee’s actions. You were in the area and thought a trip was warranted. Men like this love a little groveling. Offer your services for free to make up for Brock’s actions.”

“And if you’re lucky, he’ll tell you what’s missing,” I surmised.

“He’s not going to tell me anything,” Cash shook his head. “The guy doesn’t trust the company. And if the information was sensitive, he’s going to keep it close to the vest.”
