I glared at him. Now wasn’t the time for jokes. “I just need to…to figure out…”

“Yeah, you need to figure it out,” Cash said, helping me out. “So, go to her house.”

“Her father fired us. I kidnapped his daughter. I doubt I would be granted entry.”

“So, break in.”

I shot him an incredulous look. “So, at first, I wasn’t supposed to break the rules. Now you want me to break them left and right?”

“Not left and right. Just straight down the middle,” he said, gesturing forward.

“Thanks, but that still doesn’t solve my problem.” Sighing, I turned for the door. “I’m going for a walk.”

“Maybe one of us should go with you,” he said hurriedly.

“Relax, I’m not gonna kidnap her.”

I rushed out, hoping to get away before any of them could follow me. Not that it would make a difference. Cash would open up my tracking and they’d all watch my every move. As soon as I was outside, I flagged down a cab and gave her address without a second thought.

Pulling out my phone, I dialed the house, knowing Richard would answer. Hopefully, he would be sympathetic to my plight.

“Crosby residence.”

“Richard, it’s Brock…from the security detail.”

“Yes, Mr. Patton, how are you?”

“Good, good. Uh…I was wondering…” I cleared my throat, trying to come up with the words so I didn’t set off alarm bells.

“Ms. Wren is doing well, though not her usual self.”

“In what way?” I asked, a frown pulling at my face.

“I would say she’s a little down in the mouth.”

“But she’s okay.”

“Yes, Mr. Patton.”

“And…is everything…”

He was quiet for a moment before answering. “There’s a security team here right now,” he answered in a hushed whisper. “In fact, they’ve been here since you left.”

“Going through the computer in the study?” I questioned.

“Precisely.”

“Has Mr. Crosby hired a new detail for Wren?”

“Yes. They started almost immediately after you left, but…I see the way they watch her. I don’t like it.”

“What do you mean? How do they watch her?”

“Like they’re waiting for an opportunity. However, Mr. Crosby is too distressed to notice. I overheard him talking about something being stolen. I would imagine it’s of great value considering the frantic state he’s in.”

“Does Wren know about this?”

“No, sir.”
