“We were trying to save his job.”

“Shit, I knew I had that wrong.”

“How did you get it wrong?” Lock hissed. “It’s not that hard.”

“Hey, you wanted me fired too,” I pointed out.

“No, but I’m not against a little tough love.”

Cash stood, his fingertips pressing into the table as he stared at Betty. He was about to blow.

“Guys! It’s my fault. No one made me do it. Just let it go.”

“Yes, let it go,” Cash growled. “I will not allow employees to dictate what I should do with unruly employees.”

“I wouldn’t call me unruly,” I frowned.

Fox rushed in, panting and out of breath. “Boss…not…guilty. If the glove…doesn’t fit…you must acquit…Right?”

Cash rolled his eyes. “Fox, this isn’t the OJ Simpson trial. And there’s no jury. I’m the judge and I say what the punishment is. He kidnapped a woman!”

“I kidnapped a woman!” Fox grinned.

“He made up some lame excuse to get her alone!”

Fox slapped himself on the chest. “Me too!”

Cash’s face turned red as he stared at Fox. “Her father was pissed!”

Fox was silent. “Okay, well, you got me there. I mean, her manager was pissed, but since he was involved in the whole attempted murder scheme, I’m not counting that one.”

“The point is, the people at this company need to take some responsibility for their actions, and that starts with Brock.”

It was nice that everyone was standing up for me, but Cash was right. So, as much as I wanted to stay, I knew this was the only way forward. “I’ll be out by the end of the day.”

“It was me!” Dash yelled, running into the room.

“No, it was me!” Edu shouted, following him in.

Dash shoved him out of the way, getting in Cash’s face. “Boss, it was me. I posed as Brock and shoved him in the trunk to take his place.”

“You were here,” Cash pointed out.

“It was a body double.”

“No, it was me,” Edu cut in. “I did it all. I stole Brock’s identity and…kissed Wren. I slept with her and convinced her it was safer with me.”

Cash shot him a perturbed look. “Edu…you’re black.”

“What’s your point?”

“I think I would have noticed if it was you on the cameras.”

Edu’s nostrils flared. “Boss, I never thought I would see the day you’d bring race into the workplace.”

“I’m not!” Cash snapped. “I’m saying that none of you could have stepped into Brock’s place—not only because none of you have hair as nice as his, but also because you’re black!”

I shoved my fist in the air in victory. “I knew it!” I spun around, finally vindicated for all the years of shit I took from these guys. “Well, I may be fired, but at least I can walk away knowing I have the best hair out of everyone!”
