BROCK

I walked through the doors of OPS, ready to face the firing squad. I already knew Cash was pissed at me, but thankfully, Ben hadn’t pressed charges for breaking into his house and kidnapping his daughter. However, I was positive he let Cash know how displeased he was.

As expected, Cash was waiting in his office for me. “Close the door,” he said as soon as I walked in.

I shut the door, taking a moment to read the room. He didn’t yell at me, and that could be a good thing. Maybe he was on my side. However, it could also be the calm before the storm. Perhaps he was so mad that he couldn’t even bring himself to yell.

I turned and stopped in my tracks when I saw Betty was on her box. “Boss?—”

“Don’t even think about it,” he said, his voice dark and cold.

I took my seat, waiting for the ass-chewing. But as I sat there, he didn’t say a word. I squirmed in my seat, feeling his intense gaze boring into me. This was his plan—to torture me with cold indifference until I cracked.

I tapped my finger on the chair. My foot bounced lightly on the ground. Sweat coated the back of my neck. But still, he said nothing. If he was trying to slowly kill me, he was doing a good job. Not many people had the power to put me in such a state of unrest, but this guy could do it with just one look.

“Look, I know what I did was wrong. You have every right to be pissed at me. I thought I was protecting her, but I can see now how selfish that was of me. I should have listened to you.”

And still, he stared at me.

“Boss…”

“You should have listened to me,” he said slowly, repeating my words. “Imagine this…a boss gives instructions and his employees listen to him. Money isn’t wasted. Clients aren’t disgusted. And the employee keeps his job.”

I swallowed hard, knowing this was coming.

“What you did was not only reckless, but disobedient and disrespectful. When you own the company, you can do whatever the hell you like, but until that time, you listen to whatever the fuck I have to say.”

I nodded, hoping that meant I wasn’t fired.

“Pack your shit and get out.”

I heard it, but it still fell like a dead weight in my stomach. I had risked it all and lost. “Yeah.” I pushed out of my chair, but stopped before I walked out. “Boss…this wasn’t Fox’s fault.”

“You want me to spare him?” he asked incredulously.

“He never would have done that if he wasn’t so messed up. He just came off that job and his head’s not right.”

“His head is perfectly intact for the first time in months.”

“It was my idea,” I said quickly, trying to salvage Fox’s job. “I convinced him to run with me. I told him he did it for Anna, and he should help me out. I persuaded him with Funyuns.”

His body relaxed into his chair and the tension left him. “It figures that Funyuns would be his downfall.”

“Like I said, it was my fault.”

“You’re taking complete responsibility for his actions?”

“Completely.”

Fox wouldn’t survive without this job. It’s what kept him sane. There was no way I would be responsible for him losing a job that meant so much to him. Besides, he had a family to think about. I had no one relying on me. It would be easier for me to move on and find a new job.

Cash nodded to me. “Fine. You can leave now.”

At least I was able to spare his job. I turned and headed for the door, but before I could reach it, the door burst open and Eva walked in, glaring at me.

“Cash, you’re not firing him.”
