“Did therapy help you?”

I nod. “It did. That’s when I always stopped.”

Carter laughs. “I get that.”

“You do?”

“Absolutely. You started going to keep from losing your mind completely, but then when you felt good, guilt crept in and you believe you’ve earned that guilt instead of the good.”

I just stare at him in awe.

“I can call my therapist, maybe get some additional names from her. I don’t think we should go to the same one. But I’ll get you some recommendations and maybe we figure this stuff out.”

“There’s that word again.”

“What word? Therapist?”

“We.”

I smile at him.

“The second most beautiful man I’ve ever seen asked me if I was spoken for last night and I realized my answer was yes.”

His lips part slightly, and his eyes fill with shock.

“I didn’t just come here last night because you were drunk. I was headed here anyway. Long before the voice mails. I already knew how I felt.”

“Wow,” he breathes. “This second most beautiful man. How beautiful?” he gives me a devilish grin. “Is he a hockey player? Could I take him?”

I laugh and rub my now healed cheek. “Uh, yeah, I think so.”

Carter wrinkles up his nose and an unnecessary apology flicker through his eyes. I’d earned that punch.

“He’s a musician, he played the anthems on a violin, it was incredible. Reyes, I think Devyn called him….”

“Nandy Reyes hit on you?”

“You know who he is?” Another reminder of all the little things I don’t know about Carter. I don’t know his taste in music.

“Holy fuck, D. I might have given you a free pass for him.”

I laugh hard, enjoying how easily that comes with him. “Well, damn, I wish I’d known that. He’s pretty fucking stunning.”

Carter laughs too. “Wow, well, I’m officially jealous. Not that he hit on you, well maybe a lot,” he winks. “But you got to hear him play in person.”

“Yeah, that part was maybe even more impressive than his pink suit. I didn’t know you were a fan.”

We sit quietly, and I watch Carter finish his coffee.

“Second most beautiful?” He eyes me.

I nod. “Mm-hmm.”

He smiles again. “Do you have dinner plans tonight?”

Chapter twenty-two

Carter punches in the code to the garage and we stroll through and into the house. Easy-peasy, as though this is just any other casual dinner.
