"I may not be, but I have a hunch."

"Let's hope your hunches are right."

The door to the balcony busted open, and out came Morgan.

"So this is where you two are hiding."

I must have made a funny face at her, because she hesitated before rushing to explain. "I swear, whatever Lance said I did, I didn't. It's not my fault. He was bad at teaching me how to drive clutch."

What on earth? I frowned at Lance. "You were teaching Morgan to drive clutch?"

He shifted on his feet. "It's stupid that she doesn't know how. In case of emergency, she should always have a way out of a situation."

She rolled her eyes. "I stripped his clutch, and now he's mad at me."

I watched as the muscle in his jaw ticked. "No, I'm pissed at you because you called the goddamn Maserati pretentious then proceeded to drive it like you were Hamilton with Verstappen on his ass."

My sister shrugged. "Well, I mean, I tried. Maybe if you weren't yelling all the time."

I winced and backed up as I watched the two of them. From zero to sixty in two seconds. How the hell could he not see that the two of them were a match made in, well, not quite heaven. But they had so much tension, and their chemistry was off the charts.

He was right that Morgan was young. And to me Lance was just Lance, but he was older. But when I saw the way they reacted to each other, my brain just said, Oh God, get a room. I knew my mind had gone on a little vacay when the next words I heard were, "God, you are such a pain in the ass. It's no wonder you don't have a girlfriend."

"Well, I do, as a matter of fact, and she's coming here in two weeks. Hell, I might even make her my fiancée."

And that's when I tuned back in.

My gaze darted to Morgan's, and I watched as her face fell. Witnessing someone else's heartbreak was beyond painful.

But she was my sister. She was strong and tried to recover. "Oh God, I feel sorry for her. Well, at least you won't be a menace to the women of New York any longer."

When I looked at Lance, there was something in his expression. Worry? Sadness? Regret? "When she arrives, you can meet her."

"Oh my God, yes. I can't wait to meet her," Morgan said, sarcasm dripping from every word. "Hopefully she will not be as insufferable as you are."

And with that, my sister turned and headed back inside. One glance at Lance told me he was going back to the scotch.

"So what the fuck was that Lance?"

His gaze darted to mine and then away quickly. "That was me shutting a door."

I checked the security monitor for the fifth time just to make sure Gwen was okay while she visited with Lakewood. I had a meeting that couldn’t be put off, so I’d come in for it, and Micah had made me stay for a drink.

"You know, I'm impressed with you not losing your shit."

I lifted a brow. Had I gotten that good at masking? "I am. But that’s not what Gwen needs right now. She needs me calm and present. So I’m thinking about some kind of sabbatical, just the two of us, and getting her out of here."

My brother watched me surreptitiously from the corner of his eye. "You seem very calm."

I shrugged. "I am. I know what to do now. Before I didn't know what to do. I couldn't fix it."

My brother's sighed. "You know I love you, right?"

I smirked at him. "Yes, Merlin. Drop your wisdom on me."
