Looking around at everybody, but speaking to Jerry, he says, “You’ve been my mentor since I was a child. You paid more attention to my education and development than my own father did. My guide and my role model, you were there for all of the big moments in my life.”

He looks around again. “If Jerry did something, even something bad, I would say that he is bound to have had his reasons.” Clenching his fist. Then stretching the fingers open. “All my life I’ve known him as a huge figure in my family and in my life, and never as anything but a man of honor.” His head shakes.

Then he looks down at his phone.

His hand plunges into his pants pocket and he pulls out his massive Sig Sauer 210.

He looks up me. “When there’s trouble, Princess, you’re never far away, are you?” His hand opens and closes on the gun.

He lifts it. drops the phone back in his pocket and raises the gun with both hands. His hand opens and flexes. then he lowers the gun again. A muscle in his jaw is working.

“When there’s trouble, you run straight at it. Frighten it to death most of the time.”

His knuckles are white. This is the most stressed I have ever seen Alessio. My heart is breaking in two for him.

He lifts the gun again and he starts to turn.

The two red dots quickly move onto his temples, one on each side.

As they reach behind their belts, Jerry’s two bodyguards begin to move into a firing crouch. Almost instantly, two sharp, muted cracks are are followed by whispers of high velocity whines. With a black circle in the center of each of their foreheads, the two suited men reel back and drop.

Jerry is frozen. Alessio turns his back to him, facing me. He says, “You tried to take what’s mine. You could have succeeded. You were nearly there.”

He bends his head and stretches his neck. His hand flexes hard on the gun.

He barks, “You had it. It was yours for the taking.” Sweat runs from his hairline as his fingers stretch and clench.

“But it wasn’t enough. Nothing is ever enough.”

Then his head lifts and there’s fire in his eyes. The two red dots are back on him. He turns and raises the gun.

“And you couldn’t wait.”

He shoves the barrel of Sig Sauer hard against Jerry’s temple.

“You tried to kill the woman I love.”

“Alessio. Please. I knew you since you were a child. Please don’t kill me.”

“I”m not going to.” he says, “Not unless Lucia wants me to.”

“No,” I tell him, looking straight into Jerry’s eyes. “No. That pleasure is mine.”

I step forward, looking hard in Jerry’s eyes. Then I bend down. I have a wide, short bladed knife in my fist, I plunge the sining blade, fast and hard, first in his right knee, then his left. Then into his gut.

His scream feels like it will rip my ears as he sinks down hard onto the gravel with the gush of his bleeding knees, and then he slumps, wailing back onto his heels.

I lean over his face.

“My guess,” I tell him “it’s going to take about an hour to ninety minutes for you to bleed out. The good news is, I’m going to be here, ready to watch and relish every second.”

I wait for his next scream to stop. “I want to make sure you don’t roll off the edge of the roof or find another quick way out.”

I step back. “If Alessio wants to put you out of your misery, I’ll let that be his call.” I look around, “But nobody else goes near him or touches him.”

CHAPTER FORTY-TWO

Iso want to slap Alessio for what he put me through in this last week. I want to scream in his face and hammer my fists against his chest.
