And there it was again. The name with the weight. Except Veda was getting damn tired of the weight. Especially since it looked like her husband had forgotten all about their plans because of that weight.

She tapped out another message.

How’s this for something to call you? Dickhead?

“Oooh! We’re poking the bear, are we?” Harsh asked, reading the display of her phone over her shoulder.

Veda slapped her hands on his cheeks, squishing his face so his lips formed a fish face. “Let’s go party, Harsh.”

He gave her a long, serious look. “It is going to be the night of our lives. Just promise me one thing.”

“Anything,” she told him recklessly.

“Promise me that that barracuda of a sister of yours is not joining us.”

Veda laughed, the sound tinny and forced. “Raashi is studying tonight. We won’t disturb her. Priya.” She looked at Priyanka. “Will Aarush join us?”

“I’ll ask him.” Priyanka was giving her a long, probing look. “Are you okay? You sound…”

“I sound what?” Veda pulled out a lipstick and mirror from her purse and proceeded to freshen up her lips.

“You sound off.”

Veda’s eyes glittered as she looked at her best friend. “I am off. Completely off my rocker for thinking Agastya Kodela was going to take me on a date tonight.”

“The robot doesn’t date,” Harsh said feelingly. “I don’t think Artificial Intelligence is ready to code that into him yet.”

“Shut up, Harsh,” Priyanka snapped. “You know what Anna’s responsibilities are like.”

“And clearly I’m just another one of them.” Veda shifted on her feet, rubbing an absent hand to her suddenly aching temple. “A rather unimportant and unwelcome responsibility.”

“That’s not true, Veda.”

“Then what is?” she demanded.

“Yes, what is?” Harsh echoed.

“Shut up, Harsh.” Both girls said it at the same time, even as they watched each other.

“He cares about you,” Priyanka began.

Veda cut her off, holding up her phone. “No call. No message. Nothing. He just forgot about me.”

Priyanka opened her mouth again to argue but Veda forestalled her with an open palm.

“Be my friend tonight,” Veda said quietly. “Don’t be my sister-in-law.”

Priyanka shut her mouth. “I’m here.” She wrapped her arms around Veda and squeezed tight. “I’m yours. Tell me what to do.”

“Get out of that godawful salwar kameez and into something sexy and then let’s go party.” Veda glanced over at Harsh who put his hands up in the air.

“I’m already sexy. I’m always sexy. And I’m, also, always ready to party.”

Veda smiled, a shaky and slightly watery smile. “Alright Fun Kodelas, let’s do this.”
