Chapter 28

Cherry

What’s the difference between an oral and a rectal thermometer?

The taste.

“Are you ready?” Jade complains from the other side of the bathroom door, just like my life a week ago. I have to suppress the tears that threaten to spill whenever I think of them.

“Nearly!” I call back, fixing the smudge of mascara.

“Are you sure about this, Cherry?”

“Yup. I need to move on, and this time, I only got one notification, so there is no chance that my life is going to be ruined again.”

I hear her sigh, something she’s been doing a lot this last week, but I ignore her, too stubborn to admit that she might be right.

I miss them – all of them, but what we had for that one night isn’t logical long term.

I leave the bathroom, smoothing down my blue sundress as anxiety thrums through my body.

There are no excited butterflies tonight – not like there were a week ago, but I push forward with my plan. I need to move on and put myself out there until I find my person.

“You look… nice,” Jade says, smiling sadly at me. “Can I not convince you to put on that sexy little number you did last time?”

“No, this is perfect.”

“Where’s the date this time?” she asks. “I want updates, and I don't want you to disappear for twenty-four hours this time.”

I let out a harsh laugh, “No fucking chance. My hoo-ha is off limits.”

A sharp knock at my door has my brows furrowing.

“Is your date collecting you from here?” Jade asks me.

“Nope.”

Opening the door, I’m greeted by two uniformed police officers, grim expressions on their faces, “Are you Cherry Knight?”

“I am.”

“We have an update on the situation with your salon window. May we come in?”

“Yes. Yes, of course,” I say, opening my door wider and letting them in.

The officers sit on my sofa across from me and Jade, informing me that they found out who smashed my window and who leaked the photo to the news site.

“Do you know a Lucas Cartwright?” One of the officers asks me.

“Um, no? I don’t think I do. Why is he the one who threw the brick?”

“Unfortunately, he is. We have him in custody right now for malicious destruction of property. It also appears he is the one that provided the media with photos of you…date,” the other officer hesitated. “We can’t do anything about leaking the photo to the news site, but if you wish to press charges for your salon window, then we can proceed with that.”

“Is that it? He just gets away with it?” Jade exclaims, her tattooed arms crossing over her chest.

“I’m sorry, ma’am, but we’ll let the court decide his punishment if you decide to press charges.”

The officers stand, ready to leave, and I follow them to the door. “I want to press charges. Can I come down to the station tomorrow?”

“Of course, you are pressing charges! That prick caused you to get hurt!” Jade shouts from the living room, my fiercest protector always.

“Just pop into the station when you can, and we’ll deal with the rest,” the other officer says; they turn around and leave, getting into their cruiser.

“Shit, I’m so late for my date,” I groan, seeing the time on my phone. “I got so distracted by the police coming over.”

“Shit! Go! Go! Go!” Jade shouts, grabbing my clutch and shoving it into my hand, and pushes me out the door.
