?. . .?

Daniel? Her ex? For the love of all things holy, why the hell would she involve him of all people? From everything she’s told me, they broke up because he didn’t understand her kink, which begs another question: if he’s so turned off by it, why did he invest in her company?

“I know what you’re thinking.” She turns toward me and sits cross-legged. “You’re wondering why I’d involve him in I Can’t Believe It’s Not Jizz when the reason we broke up is because he was disgusted by my kink, right?”

“Pretty much.”

“I had the same question, but he said he doesn’t have to like something to know when it’s a good business opportunity. Even though things didn’t work out between us, he believes in my ability to make this profitable for us both.”

“Hmm.” I don’t trust myself to speak words because they won’t be nice ones. I don’t know Daniel, but I know men and there’s not a chance in hell he gave her money because he believes in her. No, he gave her money to keep his claws in her, to give him something to hold over her head when he wants something else from her. I’d bet my life on it.

“What’s that supposed to mean?” Her defenses go up, and I quickly tuck the information away so I can soothe her worry. Our relationship is too new to survive a fight.

“I’m just surprised because of everything you’ve told me about him.”

“Are you worried we’ll get back together? Because I promise you, that won’t happen.”

“No, I’m not worried about that. I don’t like that you’re still tied to your ex in that way, but even after only knowing you a day, I’m confident in our relationship.” I make a mental note to have my lawyer look into her business. I need to find out if they have a legal agreement or if she’s just trusting him not to fuck her over. Then I need to figure out a way to remove him from her life completely because this whole thing smells fishy as fuck.

She grins and tucks her hair behind her ears. “Good.”

“Come here.” I open my arms, and she straddles my lap. Her dress pools around us, and my cock hardens knowing she doesn’t have panties on. “How much longer until we have to switch the jars?”

She glances at her phone. “About ten minutes, why?”

“Because I want to make out with you.”

It’s nearlyone in the morning by the time all the jars are done and the kitchen is back to its original condition. I heft the last box onto the cart and follow her out the door. I’ve been thinking about this moment all night and need to play my cards right if I want to spend the night with her. So, while she heads to her car, I head to my truck.

“What are you doing?” she calls out.

“This won’t all fit in your car, so I’m following you home.”

“It’ll fit. I’ve done it before.”

“Baby Cakes, I’m following you home.” My tone brooks no argument. “Besides, you’ll need help unloading.”

“I’ve been doing this by myself for six months now. I don’t need help.”

Leaving the cart by my truck, I eat the distance between us. “I know you have, and obviously, you’ve done an amazing job. But I’m here now, and I want to help. I like knowing I’m lightening your load.”

“Why?” she asks.

“Because you’re mine.”

“This is crazy. You’re crazy.”

“I agree. You don’t think I’m just as confused about how quickly I’ve fallen for you? This has never happened to me before, but if it feels this right, how can I ignore it?”

She chews on her lip, shifting her weight as she debates what to do. I want the choice to be hers, but only if she makes the right one. There’s no doubt in my mind that we’re meant to be, so even if she doesn’t want to be with me, I won’t be able to walk away. I can slow down and give her more time to adjust, but that’s the only concession I’ll make.

“Okay.” Even though she doesn’t sound sure of her decision, she still made it, and I can work with that.

“You won’t regret it.” I walk backward, smiling like the lovesick, crazy man I am.

“I better not,” she mutters.
