“Before we get carried away,” I said. “Did you meet with a counselor?”

Elle wrinkled her nose, fiddling with the button at my collar.

“Yes, I did. It’s a lot of talking. I have a standing appointment every week.”

“What about your grades?” I asked.

“They’re doing better. I’m at a solid B and C average, instead of D’s and F’s.”

“That’s good,” I replied. “You can improve a bit more though. I know you have it in you.”

“Is this some weird brainiac version of foreplay? Or orgasm denial?”

I chuckled and brushed my knuckles against her cheek.

“Both. Trust me, I’m just as tortured as you are.”

“I doubt that,” Elle countered. “It doesn’t matter though. I’m still waiting for the other shoe to drop.”

My hands settled on her hips.

“What do you mean?”

“My dad hasn’t said anything about my change of plans,” she replied.

“Ah.”

“Yeah.” She rubbed her forehead, looking distracted. “I know he won’t be happy about it, and I’ll get one hell of a shitstorm for it. He’s not usually this…quiet. It’s freaking me out.”

“Hey,” I said softly, cupping her chin. “Don’t think about it. Your grades are improving. You’re in classes that cater to your strengths now. Things are looking up.”

“That’s what I’m afraid of,” Elle protested. “I’m feeling really good these days. I mean, the homework is brutal, but I like it. And I like you,” she added, sliding her arms around my waist. “But I’m scared that something will happen to take that all away.”

I shook my head.

“It won’t. I promise.”

“You can’t make that promise, Vincent,” she murmured. “If you interfere on my behalf, you could lose your job.”

I said nothing, knowing she was right. All I could do was make sure my girl was strong enough to weather whatever came her way.

“Worrying about it won’t help your studies,” I said.

Elle snorted.

“I can’t exactly just shut my brain off.”

I raised an eyebrow. Challenge accepted.

“We’ll see about that. Turn around.”

A flicker of interest flashed in her eyes.

“What do you have in mind?”

I took her by the hips and turned her around, pulling her back against my chest. For a moment, I held my breath, listening to our surroundings. A student shuffled papers nearby. A page was busy shelving books directly across from our section. Far enough away that she couldn’t see or hear us.

“Not a peep, Miss Roche,” I whispered in Elle’s ear. “Only quiet students are allowed in the library.”
