I stand up and step behind her. “Hey…” I lean down to kiss her cheek, wrapping my arms around her shoulders. “You will catch him.”

“We better.”

“You will. You’re the best damn cop in Boston,” I tell her, kissing her again. “Serial killers ain’t got nothing on Anna Silva.”

She smiles and looks back at me. “Thank you.”

We lock lips. I take a deep breath of her, firing warmth down through my toes.

“So…” I clear my throat. “Not to kill the art of the segue or anything, but…” I lay a hand on her stomach. “Any news?”

Anna sighs. “No.”

I kiss her again. “No worries. We’ve only been trying two months.”

“I’m not worried,” she says. “A little relieved, honestly. I don’t know if I can handle that and wedding planning and this.” She waves her hand at the pictures again.

“Yeah, no kidding.”

Anna settles into my embrace and rests her head on my arm. I bury my nose in her hair, taking a moment just to experience her. Anna Silva. My fiancèe. Halloween Hater but I can forgive that… I guess.

“So…” I kiss her neck. “Do you want to try… right now?”

Her head tilts to the side, giving me room to move my lips farther along her neck. “Maybe,” she hums.

I slide my hand up to cup her breast. “Maybe?” I repeat, smiling.

Her lips part as mine brush against them. She turns toward me and I lift her out of her chair. We kiss even deeper, our hands groping one another as I lean her back over the table.

I open my eyes and pause, wincing at the photos beneath her. “Actually, let’s not do it on the horrific crime scene photos…”

I lift her up and whip her around to the counter. She giggles in my ear, clinging tightly to me with her legs locked around me. I set her down and her hands fall to my belt.

The doorbell rings and we freeze.

“Ah, crap,” Anna says, laying her palms to my chest. “Evey.”

“Evey?” I ask.

“She’s dropping Charlotte off.”

I sigh as blood drains from my groin. “Charlotte…”

Anna smiles and kisses me once. “We can resume trying again later.”

I cup her face, stealing one more peck for myself. “Tonight?” I ask.

She slides off the counter. “Maybe.”

The doorbell rings again and Anna slips away. I reach out and smack her blessed ass as she passes around me. She leaves and my curious eyes fall to the table again.

“Yeech,”I say, backing away from the photos.
