ETHAN

I’m in a limo with four of the guys and their ladies, feeling completely left out as the only single man.

We’re heading to the hottest dance club in Nashville to celebrate another win. While Ruslav keeps hollering excitedly with his head poking out the sunroof, I find myself thinking of Mia the entire ride over.

As we head inside, I feel alone in a room full of people, distracted by the memory of her kiss.

Mia is here somewhere. I know she’s always busy making sure everything goes smoothly for our events, but I can usually spot her easily. However, this time it’s like she’s made herself invisible.

I stand up to leave the table. Raphael is the only one who notices and gently slaps my arm. “Hey man, where are you going?”

“Just wanna take a look around,” I shrug.

Raphael nods. “I’ll go with you. I could use some fresh air.”

I welcome the company, and we carry our drinks as we walk around the dance floor, feeling the vibrations of each beat pulsing through the floor and walls.

All the while, I keep an eye out for her. The place has two floors and a terrace. We refill our drinks on the second floor and slowly make our way up to the top.

Raphael joins his girlfriend Sarah, who is already dancing with some of her friends.

When the chill of the night air hits my face and fills my lungs, I know I’ve reached the terrace. Gone is the stuffy indoor air, replaced by a refreshing breeze.

The terrace is just as packed as the lower floors, and I struggle to find a place by the railings to sip my beer.

My eyes keep searching for Mia. I’m still feeling the ache of her nibble, and I absentmindedly graze my fingers over my lips. Lost in thought, I almost believe I’m seeing a mirage when I finally spot her.

She’s the only woman here wearing a business suit, and she makes it look incredible. On her feet are white peep-toe kitten heels, which move rapidly as she goes to and fro.

Mia’s hair is pulled back in a cascading bun, revealing the wireless earpiece she uses to communicate with her staff.

When I walk up to her, she’s speaking into her earpiece while reading details from a clipboard. She glances at me briefly, but her expression doesn’t change. She remains very professional and finishes what she’s doing before telling me, “I can’t talk right now.”

I stare at her in disbelief. “But you’re the one who bit me.”

Mia eyes widen in alarm. “Did I hurt you?”

“I’ll live,” I say, softening my expression. “But we need to talk about it.”

She looks at me solemnly, then finally nods. Removing the earpiece from her ear, she waves me over, indicating I should follow her. I do, to a spot where the music is softer.

Her shoulders tense, her biceps flexing visibly through her sleeveless blazer. With her back to me, she looks up at the full moon in a sky peppered with bright stars.

“I had a dream about you,” she finally blurts out.

“Really?” My curiosity peaks. “Consider me intrigued.”

“Well, let’s just say it was a not-safe-for-work dream.” Mia crosses her arms but giggles lightly. “I couldn’t shake the thought of you from my head, and that’s why I did what I did. I’m sorry.”

I step in front of her so she can see the smile on my face, meant to be reassuring. “Nothing to be sorry about. You can’t control that sort of thing,” I say, trying to ease her embarrassment.

“Yeah, but I could have controlled the kiss I gave you…” She averts her gaze from me. “It was impulsive. I’m sorry.”

“I took no offense,” I say, looking deeply into her eyes. “Actually, it was a welcome surprise.”

Her eyes widen, and she raises an eyebrow. “How come?”

I look down at my feet. “If you can utter an embarrassing confession, I can too. Amanda and I barely touched each other the last two years of our marriage.”
