“I don’t know why I did that,” I murmur.

He gentles his hold, his finger rubbing my upper arm. Softly, he says, “It took me by surprise.”

I accidentally snort. “Me too.” And it did, which scares me a little.

“I am sorry that my actions hurt you.”

You didn’t hurt me… I stop myself short of protesting aloud.

Okay, maybe he hurt me a little, but I just feel out of control. Injecting me with that yellow liquid has changed me somehow, and I don’t know if it’s good or bad. Shaking my head, I decide it’s definitely bad. What if I half-transform into something like Tekil? Or even transform completely, like Andred? Or were they trying to do something else to me? I really want answers, and I want them right now! More than that—I want to kill every last one of them!

The full strength of my conviction shocks me, and I suck in a sharp breath.

“You didn’t hurt me,” I finally say aloud, still staring at the ground in front of my bare feet. “I just embarrassed myself.”

One finger gently but firmly lifts my chin, forcing me to meet his eyes as he rips off the blindfold. “Please do not be embarrassed.”

I scoff, jerk my chin away from his hand and look away. “I can’t help it.”

He drops his arm and sighs. “Let’s see if we can find somewhere more suitable to rest and hunt. We are both exhausted.””

I nod, wanting to put this humiliating moment behind us. To say that I am out of my element is an understatement.

____________

Tekil

Walking beside Myla, he tries to remember everything about the lab. Where he and the others were being held before they separated them. The code for the door. Weapons; they would need weapons.

But every few seconds, his mind shifts back to Myla. She is a constant distraction.

When she lays her hand in his, Tekil feels the instant connection and wants to hold onto it—to claim what is his. Then she nips his bottom lip. Not only does she take him by surprise, it makes him want to throw her down and sink deep inside her body. It takes all of his self-control just to hold himself back.

This is not normal behavior for the Kintue; they do not engage in sexual activity—they simply donate a sample of DNA. This feeling is primal on the most basic level, and it scares him.

What would she think of him for wanting something so archaic? Yet so basic...a need that could never be satisfied by a cold and clinical DNA donation.

Tekil’s mind races with scenarios of what the Acradidia have done to change his body, his way of thinking… It must be this animal inside; there is no other logical explanation.

“Are you okay?”

A little confused, he says simply, “I am well.”

“You sure? You’re awfully quiet.””

“Sorry, just thinking.”

“About what?”

“The experiments.”

Walking so close together, he feels her shoulder tense, then relax a little.

“Yeah, they were awful,” she replies in a voice laced with pain.

Still seeking a better place to hide, Tekil needs out of this sun, and soon. The blindfold helps, even though he can still see shapes from the light that filters in.
