I squeezed my eyes shut. That was a self-destructive thought, and I was an emotionally wound-up time bomb. If I didn’t leave soon, the word vomit would start. How embarrassing would that be?

“I need to go,” I whispered. “I’m sorry.”

Adam didn’t say anything, but he finally moved his arm and I slipped out from the bed, hurrying to collect my items off the ground. God, they were everywhere. In his bedroom, the living room, and my pair of panties had somehow ended up on the kitchen counter. Definitely not the first pair of panties up there.

“You can take one of my shirts.”

I tugged up my jeans and turned around to see Adam, completely naked, a Romans shirt in his hand. The moonlight from the windows cascaded over his body. Hard lines of muscle caught my eye and the reddish-brown hair that made his happy trail leading right to his cock—

Oh my god. MOVE.

“I’m fine,” I said, even if I wasn’t.

Is this a one-time thing?

Are you going to be bringing other girls back?

How much is this going to hurt?

But those were questions that led to heartbreak. A cool, reckless college student wouldn’t think about that. She’d jump in without a care in the world. And if I wanted to keep a healthy distance between Adam and I, I could accomplish that by just keeping this casual. Fun.

Adam could have whoever he wanted, I could have whoever I wanted. Which was against my core DNA, but it was the smart thing to do.

“I don’t want you fucking another guy.”

Blinking, I glanced back at him. “What?”

“I thought about it. I don’t like it.” Adam crossed his arms over his chest. “So I don’t want you to do it.”

I opened my mouth to reply, but found I didn’t have one.

Did he just say what I think he said?

He cleared his throat. “I haven’t had this conversation before…I don’t want to share you with somebody else.” He hesitated. “And I’m not sleeping with anybody. Else, I mean—just you.”

“Oh,” I said because what else could I say?

“That’s a yes, right?” he pressed. “Ice princess?”

An entire concrete weight had been taken off my shoulders. I could finally breathe again. I slipped on my shoes and nodded slowly, my whole body in the mix between post-orgasmic bliss and weirdly satisfied with how much Adam was pushing for an answer.

The tension visibly disappeared from his body, and Adam grinned. “You can still stay the night.”

“You know I can’t do that,” I said lightly, opening the door.

“But I’ll see you tomorrow?”

I bit back a smile. “Of course.”

The Cowboy Costume

If I had thought that fucking Piper would put everything to rest - I couldn’t have been more wrong. If anything, it was worse. Morning, noon, and night, she was at the front and center of my thoughts. Everything revolved around her. If I wanted to walk across the street, she had to be on the other side.

Which is why I found myself shelling out nine hundred goddamn dollars for professional-grade cowboy boots.
