“No, he will obey them—he’ll also work around them, loopholes, whatever he can.” Zephyr closed his eyes briefly. “It makes no difference if the court agrees with Mother or you, Finch. In the end they are humans. You need to think of yourself here.”

“Myself?”

“They. Are. Only. Humans.” His voice rose with each word.

“I made a promise…I can’t break that, you know it.”

His head fell back in clear frustration. “You’re a fool, Brother.”

“No, you’re a fool, Zephyr. You choose pain, darkness, and everything that’s wrong, and I think you’re starting to realize that.”

With his hand pressed to my chest he pushed me against the elevator wall.

“I came to warn you. I hoped I could save you, but I see you’re stupid enough to die with humans. So be it. Don’t say I didn’t try.”

“Try?” I scoffed. “I watched Mother cry the day you took Father’s hand and walked away with him. Every day since she sat in the garden, likely still does, hoping you will return.”

He swallowed loudly, there it was, that glimmer. He did regret his choice.

“She’d accept you with open arms. You have to know that, Zephyr. She loves you.”

And like someone had hit a switch, his expression shifted.

“I choose the winning side, Brother. Mother doesn’t prevail here.” He released me, and I slumped down. “And neither do you.”

He disappeared and the elevator began to move.

CHAPTER THIRTY-FIVE

Easton

When Finch came home after his shift, I could tell something was off but he waved it away, claiming it was nothing, just a hard day. After I said good night to the kids I intended on trying to make him feel better, but Tru asked if she and Milo could talk to me.

I was in her bedroom. Milo sat on the end of her bed, and she was beside him.

“This looks ominous.”

Tru rolled her eyes; Milo giggled.

“We just wanted to talk to you.” Tru was so much like her mother with her demeanor.

I grabbed her desk chair, turned it, and sat.

“What’s up?”

They shared a look before Tru spoke.

“Milo and I just wanted to tell you that we’re okay with you and Finch being boyfriends.”

Oh…I’d known I’d needed to have this conversation with both of them, but with everything going on I hadn’t been able to find the perfect time.

“I wasn’t trying to hide anything from the two of you. I know I told you both about the date with him, but I wasn’t sure what that would mean going forward.”

Tru laughed. “You weren’t hiding it. Like you said, we knew you took him on a date.”

“Brat.”

“My friend Billy has two moms. It’s cool.” Milo shrugged.
