Tru: But he’s ok?

Me: I won’t leave his side, but he’ll be fine and home tomorrow.

Tru: Thank goodness.

I got to the room at the same time he was being pushed in. Said hi to the nurses who I recognized and stayed out of their way while they did their thing.

The entire time, Easton stared at me. Questions were swirling in his green eyes, and I had to figure out who’d exposed magic first: me or Arachnis. Only after I comprehended that would I understand how to proceed further.

“Okay, I’ll be back in an hour. You rest, Mr. Kooper.”

He still had an oxygen mask on that would be replaced with a nasal cannula soon enough.

Once the door shut and it was just the two of us, he slid the mask off.

“You need to keep that on.”

“And you need to answer some questions, Finch.”

“I have one before you start asking, and the answer to that will determine how this goes. And whenever I’m talking, you have the face mask on. Deal?”

“Deal.” He covered his mouth with the mask.

“You said my brother and magic. I’m assuming you meant Arachnis. I need to know what he said to you that made you connect anything to magic…Why did you say that?”

He slid the mask down. “He had me locked in the restroom. He called me human as if he wasn’t. There was something about his appearance that wasn’t normal. But when he touched the wall, it was like the fire was being called, and the wall bubbled and fell, and then he just disappeared. Like magic.” He coughed, so he placed the mask up and took a few breaths. After he’d taken a few inhalations, he continued.

“Seeing all that, I remembered the powder you gave me and used it. It worked. I don’t know how; it just did.”

“So because Arachnis showed you magic, you tried the powder?” He nodded.

“I need to make a call, and then I’ll return to answer your questions.”

I didn’t give him a chance to rebut. I stepped out of the room and called Daisy.

“What do you got?” she said in way of a greeting.

“Arachnis didn’t expect Easton to live—I’m sure of it. So he didn’t worry about exposing himself or magic. But with Easton still living, Arachnis has in fact broken fae law.”

Daisy chuckled. “Sit tight, Finch. I’m going to reach out to your mother and let her know.”

I slipped into the hospital room and saw that Easton had fallen asleep. I sat on the small sofa and watched over him while he slept.

CHAPTER TWENTY-FIVE

Easton

I woke to the smell of smoke. It shook me to my core and I sat up too fast, something tugging from my arm.

“Easton, it’s okay. You’re okay.” Finch’s silver eyes shone with such compassion, it washed my worry right away.

The moment the bandages that were wrapped around my wrist and arm tore at the burned skin, I hissed.

“Lie back down.” Finch’s hand rested on my chest, and I relaxed into the bedding. “I’ll adjust the bed so you’re sitting up more.”

“How long was I out?”

“Just a few hours. You let the oxygen work, so that’s important.”
