“I’m here. You’re safe,” I whispered, but he wiggled his fingers. I stepped closer and grabbed his hand. “I’m here.”

He yanked me even closer and lifted his mask, much to the paramedics’ dislike. I leaned in to hear what he was saying.

“Your brother. Magic,” was all he managed before he started coughing.

I knew who was behind this, and by giving Easton the powder, he’d likely realize something was abound. But mentioning my brother surprised me. Had Arachnis been in there? Had he talked to Easton?

“You riding with him?” the paramedic asked me.

“If he’s okay with that.”

Easton nodded, and I followed them to the ambulance.

Easton was stable and resting in the ambulance, so I texted Daisy to update her on everything.

Daisy: Arachnis exposed who he was to a human?

Me: Yes, but I’m not sure if he broke the rules first or if I did with the powder.

Daisy: You said to use it, not that it was magic. Arachnis showed him…we need more detail from Easton. But this could give your mother the power she needs to have the board of both light and dark punish your father.

Me: I’ll keep you updated. Just don’t leave those kids.

Daisy: I won’t.

Even though I worked at that hospital, I was only allowed to go as far as the waiting room when they wheeled Easton away.

I paced, watching the news that was actively covering the fire. Because not a lot happened here, this was huge news.

A few hours later Tru texted, asking if I knew anything about her dad. Obviously they were told he’d gone to a fire, and Daisy must’ve said I was with him at the hospital but not what happened.

Me: I’m waiting to hear but he was talking and everything when they took him back.

Tru: I’m scared.

Me: I know but I’m keeping a close eye on him.

Tru: Thank you, Finch.

Finch: As soon as I know anything I’ll let you know.

It was another hour before a doctor came out.

“Finch? This is a surprise. I was told Mr. Kooper’s boyfriend was out here but had no idea it was you.” Dr. Lee was a nice guy and a great ER doctor.

“Yeah, how is he?”

“Some smoke inhalation, so we’re keeping him overnight for observation. Some burns but nothing serious. We’ll watch for infection. He should be able to leave tomorrow barring no issues. We’d like to monitor his heart.”

“Procedure, I get it.”

“He’s being wheeled to a room. Two-fifteen I think, you can head up if you want.”

“Thanks, Dr. Lee.”

“Take care, Finch.”

I quickly texted Tru to let her know he was okay and that they were keeping him overnight as a precaution.
