I got as close to the fire as the trucks and closed off area would allow. Once I stepped out, I was assaulted by magic.

There was no misunderstanding what was happening. My father had decided he’d had enough and had chosen to start a war.

It didn’t matter if I wanted to walk away from the Koopers or not at this point; I couldn’t. My father wasn’t going to rest as long as they lived, and I wouldn’t allow him to harm a hair on their heads.

He wants a war? He’s got one.

CHAPTER TWENTY-THREE

Easton

I left Tru and Milo alone for only twenty minutes. Daisy was on her way and by the time I reached the destination of the fire, she’d texted me that she was at my house.

Knowing the kids were okay, I was able to focus on the beast in front of me.

I saw my ladder truck, 121, just arriving and made my way to them.

“Boss.” Hastings nodded as soon as he saw me. “Got your gear here.”

Hastings was the one who’d called me, and I’d known it was serious since he was asking me to help while I was on furlough.

“Thanks.”

“Kooper, good to see ya, man.” Lincoln patted my shoulder while I made quick work of gearing up.

“You too, what are we looking at?”

“It’s bad. Fabric shop, place went up fast.”

“Anyone inside?”

Lincoln shook his head but suddenly stopped. “I don’t think so—I mean, it’s after hours.”

“Let’s get in there and make sure.”

We were a well-oiled machine. Sometimes it was scary how in sync my people were. We were making our way toward the building when I heard my name shouted.

“Easton!”

I turned and saw Finch slipping under the taped-off area. An irate cop was trying to stop him, but I waved him off.

“Finch, what the hell are you doing here?”

“You need to be careful.”

I smirked. “This is the job, Finch. I’ve been doing it for a while, and I really do need to go.”

“This isn’t like anything you’ve ever seen, Easton. You need to trust me on this.”

It struck me, in that moment, the genuine fear pouring off him.

“Is there something you know that could help us?”

“Just that I don’t know if you guys have what it takes to fight something like this.”

If I wasn’t in a rush, I’d have been insulted. “What’s that supposed to mean?”

“Here.” He handed me a bag of what I swore was sugar.
