Page 50 of Hurt Me Not

Easton texted the following morning, and I responded as if my whole head wasn’t about to explode with confusion. I was on at the hospital for three straight days and that worked in my favor since I didn’t have a clue what I was going to do.

Daisy was right, and that was what the problem was more than anything…I didn’t want her to be.

I’d never wished for my mother to be beside me as much as I did right then. She’d sprinkle words of wisdom and help guide me to the path I was meant to take.

Work kept me busy, for which I was grateful, and by the third day on my feet I genuinely welcomed rest. As soon as I got home I made a beeline for the shower, tossed on a sleep gown, and starfished on the bed.

I wasn’t sure what time it was, but I was jolted awake at the sound of firetrucks. Fool’s Pass was a quiet place mostly, and while we had emergencies from time to time, they were rare enough to grasp everyone’s attention when they happened.

I peeked out the bedroom window and could see a plume of smoke coming from near the bridge toward Sorrow Glen.

The knock on my front door didn’t shock me and upon opening it, I was greeted by a frantic Daisy. I moved out of her way.

“Don’t worry, Daisy, it’s a fire; they happen. It’s not in the direction of the Koopers’ house, and I’m far enough away from it.”

She spun and tilted her head. “It’s an all-call, Finch.”

“What’s that mean? I’m not a firefighter.”

“Easton called me to see if I could swing by and watch the kids because he had to go in.”

“I thought he was on furlough.”

Daisy took a breath. “It’s a bad fire, Finch. He’s a lieutenant, of course he’s going in.”

“Are you going to watch the kids?” I asked as I began running around, getting dressed.

“Yeah, I have a bad feeling about this fire, and someone needs to be with those kids. You’re coming with me.”

“Like hell I am. I’m going to find Easton. If he’s in trouble, he can’t face a fae on his own.”

“Finch!”

I spun on my heels and poked Daisy in the chest. “This isn’t up for debate. Protect those children like you would me.”

“I don’t understand why he didn’t call you to watch them. That would’ve been ideal.”

I was tying my shoes but looked up at Daisy. “Because in the midst of a life-threatening emergency, he knew I worked three straight nights and was exhausted. He didn’t want to bother me.”

“For fuck’s sake, he really is the perfect man.”

“Mmhmm.”

“I don’t like you being out there alone.”

I grabbed my keys and Daisy followed me outside. “I know but the kids need you more. You’re right that my father doesn’t fight fair. All he’d need to know is that I’d fight for Tru and Milo and he’d take them to lure me back.”

“Fine, but check in with me.”

“I promise.”

We both got into our cars and drove in opposite directions: Daisy toward the Koopers’ house and me to the fire.

The closer I got to the flames, the more I knew Daisy’s belief that this wasn’t normal was true.

The power and magic pulsating from the blaze was strong. There was one fae who had the magic to create such a spectacle: Arachnis.

His gift—or one might say nightmare—was creating and manipulating fire…as well as the power to control spiders.
