“Is Nathaniel home yet?”

“Yes. I picked Mr. Heaton and Mr. Melnick up from JFK two hours ago. He looked banged up, but it could have been worse.”

“That’s what I say. I’ll be glad to see him. How’s Jordan?”

“He’s well. He sends his regards. Today was hectic for him. He’s currently in a meeting downtown. After I drop you off, I’ll be picking him up.”

“Is he coming to my place tonight, he didn’t say.”

“He wants to give you some time with Mr. Heaton.”

“I’m sure Nate wouldn’t mind.”

“He respects your privacy.”

“I’ll make it up to him this week.”

I look out the window for the rest of the trip, lost in my thoughts. I hope that Jordan knows that even though I love Nathaniel very much, he’s my priority. It’s something I need to discuss with Nate when the time is right. He needs to know what my relationship status is. I don’t want any jealousy between my two favorite men.

Albert drops me off in front of my building, and I head upstairs. Nate is sprawled out on the living room couch, and tears flood my eyes when I see cuts and bruises all over his face and arms. His wrist is bandaged and must be the place that he received stitches. I gently stroke his hair and sniffle. He wakes and gives me a week's smile. I can’t hold back, and I cry freely.

“Come on, baby girl, I’m okay. I’m here.”

He sits up and gestures for me to sit next to him. I do and lean against him. He hugs me, and I bury my head in his chest.

“Nate, if I lost you. I wouldn’t know what to do.”

“But you didn’t. I’m here. Nice of your boyfriend to send me his plane. It was great to fly in luxury. It must be awesome to be rich.”

“He did it without me asking. He knows how important you are to me.”

“That’s cool. I’ll have to thank him when I get back up to speed. You didn’t tell me they were rearranging the lobby. It looks great.”

“Doesn’t it? So much nicer now that we have a doorman.”

“You feel so good in my arms. When that bomb went off, all I could think of was you. That I wouldn’t see you again, and the last time we were together, we fought.”

“But you’re here now, and we’re together again.”

He squeezes me against him, and I inhale his scent of sandalwood and cinnamon from the gum he always chews.

“Did you happen to learn how to cook while I was away?”

“Nope. It’s still sandwiches or take out. You choose.”

“Take out. I’m missing Sal’s Sicilian.”

I get up to look at the menu. I don’t feel like eating pizza on such a hot night. I prefer salad. That and I don’t want to gain weight. With all the delicious gourmet food Jordan is serving me, I’m going to have to start working out, so I don’t get fat.

I place the order, and the front desk calls me when it arrives. I head downstairs to pay for it, and when I come back, Nate has set the small table in the corner of our kitchen.

“Being away has turned you into a domestic.”

“Not really. I just wanted to do something nice.”

“I could have handled it when I came back up.”

“You worked all day while I lounged in an awesome plane and limo. It’s the least I could do.”
