“Did you sleep with them?”

“Emma, I fucked my share if that’s what you want to know.”

“How old were you when you lost your virginity?”

“Sixteen and knew shit of what I know now. How old were you?”

“The same. If Ricky had his way, it would have been a lot sooner.”

“Asshole.”

“He just felt that we were dating long enough, and I was on the pill, so why not. I wanted to be ready. I don’t think I was at sixteen.”

“And after?”

“It became a regular weekly thing. I didn’t enjoy it because he wasn’t gentle. I should have said no, but I felt obligated since we were dating.”

He gives me a hard look, “You should be worshipped and made love to with tenderness. Not fucked for his pleasure.”

“We were stupid kids. What did we know about sex?”

“Don’t make excuses for him, Emma. He was adult enough to have sex; then he should be man enough to satisfy you.”

“Jordan, why are you getting so upset?”

“Because it angers me that you weren’t treated properly.”

“It’s the past. You can’t undo it; you can only try to avoid repeating it.”

Chapter 16

I can’t sit still. I’m excited about seeing Nathaniel. Jordan sent his jet to England on Sunday evening. He’s transporting Nate and Barry back to the United States, which I’m grateful for. I haven’t seen Nate for almost three weeks, which is far too long. We didn’t talk the last week he was home and then he was gone. A stupid argument that we should have resolved immediately.

When I get home, Nate should be there. His injuries were minor. He could have been out on the main concourse when the explosion took place. Several of those that were out in the open died. If it had been Nate, I would have been really fucked up. He’s my best friend next to Angie, and I rely on him for support when I need it.

“Emma, what time is Nate coming home today?”

I glance at my watch, “Around two Jordan told me. Do you and Charlie want to stop by to say hello?”

“Maybe tomorrow. Let Nate get settled first. I’m sure you want him all to yourself for a little while.”

“I do. I miss him so much. At least I’ll have him for some time before he goes to the Hamptons.”

“What’s he going to do for the month of July?”

“Not sure. Jordan was seeing if he could hook him up with some gigs in the city.”

“Does he know that?”

“No, but he can always so no.”

Angie’s desk phone rings, and our conversation ceases. I do wonder what Nate would say if my boyfriend got him a few DJ gigs around the city. He has a manager for that, and he might take it the wrong way. I guess I’ll find out when I get home. That’s if Jordan can come through.

The rest of the day drags, and by the time five comes, I’m the first one in the elevator. Unexpectedly, Albert is waiting at the curb to take me home, which I appreciate. The end of June heat is overpowering, and I’m sure the subway would be a mass of sweaty, stinky straphangers. He tips his hat at me, and I get into the Mercedes. The air conditioning feels good on my skin, which has already broken out in a light sweat.

“Albert, thank you for taking me home.”

“Don’t thank me, thank Jordan. He wanted you to be comfortable since it’s so hot out.”
