“I know, and I’m sorry about that. It’s my fault.”

“You see a side of Jordan few people get to. He is usually all business.”

“I’d like to see him in action one day.”

“Jordan exudes professionalism in the office. He’s firm but fair, and it’s the reason why his employees stay with him.”

“He mentioned that. He wants me to come work for him.”

“You should consider it.”

“I don’t want to seem like I’m getting favors because we’re together.”

“Jordan would never allow it. You would have to perform just like the other employees. Nicky worked for him before.”

This is news to me, “He did?”

“Yes, but his attitude was such that he thought he could get away with whatever he wanted. Jordan politely asked him to leave. He couldn’t have the disruption in the office.”

“I fear that I’ll be a disruption if I’m there.”

“Jordan needs your type of disruption. He spends too much time building his empire rather than enjoying the fruits of his labor. I told him he needs to slow down. Maybe now that he has you, he will.”

“I’m flattered.”

We continue to chat about things until he pulls onto Central Park West, and I give him the exact address. He drops me off, and I thank him, telling him I hope Jordan can join me here later. Albert nods and drives off.

Upstairs, my sister’s apartment is chaos. My niece and nephews, Johnny and Arabella, JC, and Lexi’s children and CJ, my sister Megan and her fiancé, Chase’s son, are running around. Hunter and his fiancée Rory are trying to catch and keep them out of Lexi and Megan’s way while they prepare dinner.

I greet my family in the kitchen who are enjoying glasses of red wine and sitting around the granite island. They take their turns hugging me. My sister Lexi’s best friend, Olivia, has joined us. I’m envious of her long thick black hair and green eyes the color of moss. After I hug everyone, I sit down and sip a glass of wine that’s offered to me. Then comes the interrogation.

“Emma, Lexi tells me you’re dating someone,” JC says.

“Yes. His name is Jordan Grayson.”

Everyone stops talking and stares at me.

“Did I say something wrong?”

“You’re dating Jordan Grayson?” Hunter asks while holding a squirming Johnny.

“He said he knew you.”

“He should. He outbid us for a building and property down by the waterfront. Jordan is a tough cookie.”

“Is it a problem that he comes here for dinner?”

“Not at all. It’s business. You win some; you lose some.”

I breathe a sigh of relief. The last thing I want to do is have an awkward dinner with my family because they despise my boyfriend.

“How’s Nate?”

“I don’t know. I haven’t spoken to him. We received information from Jordan’s contacts and his manager Barry. Jordan is sending his jet to take Nate home in a few days.”

“What a horrible thing. What is the world coming to?”

The buzzer on the oven goes off, and Lexi removes a beautifully cooked bake ziti with bubbling cheese on top. Seeing it tugs at my heart because it reminds me of family. A few minutes later, the front desk is calling with the delivery of pizza, which JC goes down to pick up.
